MR Speaker Quality?

MR Speaker Quality?

Postby Foo on Sat Aug 20, 2022 5:03 am

Hi all, I have a new GLS+ Club Cab coming after some maggot stole my 2013 model back in February and wrote it off. I'm wondering about the quality of the speakers in the new ones, as I managed to retrieve my amp from the old Ute and am thinking about connecting that up to the head unit when I get it in January.

What size/wattage/type/number of channels are we talking about for the amp? What level of quality are you wanting to achieve? What did you have in the MN? Were you happy with that?

Generally the speakers are average quality, rated at about 15W RMS so they'll work ok with amps rated up to about 50W peak. If you're looking for concert sound they probably won't do, nor will they take full volume constantly or doof doof.

My experience is that you're probably better off to talk to an audio sound specialist.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Well the Tritons have four speakers. I had 4 x 300watt Kickers speakers, two component in the front and two way coaxial in the rear. Amp was 4ch Alpine 45watt per channel. I just wanted to know what others thought of their speaker ability in the new Tritons.

My guess is that the 300W Kickers are not RMS rated, otherwise your 45W/channel amp would have all kinds of problems driving them.

I replaced the ones in my ML with Jaycar 85W 6.5" and was quite happy with the result, running on a 50W/channel headunit amp. Alpine make some very good speakers, but you have to listen to them first because the sound varies, a lot, from model to model. The top end Clarion are pretty good too and then there are a whole range of top shelf speakers. In the Pajero I have Sony splits in the front and Panasonic in the rear. Not 100% happy but replacing them again isn't on the priority list at the moment. Again, listen to them first - sometimes they just don't suit the music you like to listen to. The Sonys sounded great in the shop but the 50W/channel headunit amp just doesn't have the grunt to drive them.

Have a look at this thread and read my comments on the factory speakers.

Not sure about what you're saying but I could crank the volume up and not have speaker distortion, unlike standard speakers, before I upgraded them. :?

The young bloke at Auto Pro when I asked him what combo would work, gave me the combo of speakers and amp, that would work well with my Alpine head unit. :)

Had a look on the Kicker website. Their 6.5" splits are rated at 100W RMS, not 300W. That fits a lot better with your amp.
https://www.kicker.com.au/product/46css654-6-5-160mm-100-watts-rms-components/

6.5" two way have the same rating.

Personally, I don't like running speakers rated 100% above the amp but some combinations do work. Couldn't find any detailed data on their website so if your experience was ok then that's all I have to go on. The Alpine amps are generally pretty good.

The power on the boxes are different to the recommended supply power to them and that's what the amp was for. Anyway, I'll investigate with more questions from an audio supplier, I just thought that someone here may have tried this with their Triton. ;)

From the spec sheet.

These CS-Series speakers work best with 100 watts of recommended power.

Watching with interest. Keep us posted with your findings as I am interested in improving the sound in the triton.

I haven't ventured any further the speakers, I picked up my new Ute last month and am pretty happy with the quality of the sound for the time being. :) I will at some point in the future be putting the amp and replace the rear speakers and put the splits in that I hadn't got around to for my old Ute.
