Driving light wiring - MQ

A lot of sense in what you say WUNSIE.

It's a good idea not to poke around the HID headlights, especially when on. The very high voltages (18,000 to 21,000 volts are only for a short time after switching on and they settle to 85 volts AC after that. Still enough to give you a very nasty jolt.

Yes I agree. But careful checking of voltage with a hi impedance multi meter indicated that the point chosen is only 12v. What would be helpful would be a diagram of the factory wiring loom so I could make up a similar loom.

Hi,
Well I have fitted and wired up my Lightbar using the terminal in the fuse box. All works great and no need to cut touch any existing wiring. :D

Hi jim, when you say you wired up via the fuse box terminal ?, does your lightbar become active when switching from low to high beam or is it independently controlled, in other words do you have to manually switch it on/off each time you want it on, :?:
Cheers

It is switched with the high beam. If you look at the pic I posted, you will see the terminal that I used. The 2 fuses beside it are the high beam fuses

I'm wiring up a LED lightbar and was wondering where did you take the negative cable to after picking up the positive off the back of the headlight?

Did you have any luck. Trying to do the same with the same "plug and play" kit.... seems the Triton has changed the connectors.

Final touches to my Lightbar install complete. Switch from AOB arrived. Looks the business. Wired up and working great. In my GLS there is a light for the glove box. I tapped into that wire for the switch illumination. :D

My skills in wiring is very limited, was hoping somebody would be able to help me out regarding using the fuse box, do I just fit the positive wire in there?

@mikejams Best to get someone to help you or give us some more information like model of your vehicle, type of lights/harness you're fitting and where you are.

Hmmm, seems Mitsubishi have actually done something sensible - the wiring for halogen and HID is, as far as this exercise is concerned, the same.

So, for high beam, power flows through the relay to Fuse 3 and then via the Light Green wire to the left headlight. Power for switching of a relay to control a light bar or driving lights can be picked up anywhere from the fuse to the headlight. Possibly the best solution is an Add-a-fuse unit connected to Fuse 3 in the engine compartment fuse box. Best to take care to connect to the upstream side so no additional load goes through the original fuse, even if the current drawn by a relay is minimal. Do not use this fuse/circuit to power the ancillary light(s) - just the relay.

Connection of the rest of the light bar harness should be fairly simple, noting that some of those harnesses are set up for negative switching on Toyotas and may need appropriate changes to suit the positive switching of the triton.

Thanks I really appreciate the response, but definitely above my pay grade to start messing around as you have said. I was initially searching through and thought this would be simple. Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and pay a sparky.

I know you are probably sick of me already, but just trying to confirm I'm doing the right thing. I connect the positive from where the headlight adaptor should attach to the fuse box via an add on fuse and then earth the negative? Thanks very much?

No, not sick of you at all. Happy to help if you have a problem.

Here is a simple diagram of the correct way to connect up a set of driving lights or a light bar. The connection that is marked "high beam wire at back of headlight" can also be made to Fuse 3 in the fuse box using an Add-a Fuse (Jaycar have them). Only possible problem is if the MQ uses the micro size fuses, for which I haven't seen an Add-a-Fuse of that size. If that's the case then you'll need to splice into the loom behind the left headlight. I gave you the correct wire colour last night.

Otherwise connections should be as per the diagram although some headlight harnesses have a slightly more complicated switch than the SPST assumed in this diagram.

That diagram is incorrect,
A relay with an 87a terminal is a change over relay.
Wired as per the diagram one light would be on all the time and go off when hi beam activated.
Any relay used must have twin 87 output terminals.
