Replacement radio antenna?

Replacement radio antenna?

Postby jerrah on Fri Jun 17, 2016 10:43 pm

I have the GLX extendable boom antenna not the stubby GLS/Exceed antenna...

So I drove into my garage tonight and heard my 1000km old antenna snapping off and slapping into the roof of my car. It wasn't a clean break and I've managed to slide it back into the body of the antenna housing and the radio still appears to work. My last ute had the antenna built into the glass which seems like a much better solution.

I'll probably have to replace it at some point. Other than the potentially expensive Mitsubishi dealer option can anyone recommend anywhere to purchase a replacement? The MQ is a bit new to be looking at the wreckers or eBay...

I wonder if I could rig up an aftermarket window mounted antenna?

That external stick looks the goods.

That's a great idea! Thanks! I was going to do one for the CB anyhow, I'll just have a matching set now.

Shippy, I'd be interested in how directional that antenna is, given that it's ground plane dependent. In the Paj I have the one in the rear side window and it's always been a bit ordinary.

Could you do a test by tuning in to a distant station and then turning the car around to see how much it improves/degrades depending on how much body is facing towards the transmitter?

Shure can do when I get back on deck im crook in bed with man flue..id say if I'm driving away from the station I'm going to loose it anyway...as for to the station it will be good because of the ground plane of the bonnet..ether Way it's better than the standard one being vertical to catch all the wavelength...

Replacement radio antenna?

Postby viking shippy on Tue Jun 21, 2016 6:48 pm

As I suspected the 5th I drove around a bit today and found that my antenna is directional I had better reception when I was headed towards the radio station antenna nice signal bouncing off my bonnet..with the mount on my bullbar

Replacement radio antenna?

Postby snakesoup on Tue Jun 21, 2016 7:28 pm

usually a ground plane works the opposite to this snippy,
as in what ever side of the antenna the ground plane is " in this case your vehicle " it usually works better in that direction so in theory should work better when the transmitter is behind your vehicle, and is why people used to mount the ground dependent 27mhz ariels in the centre of the roof and there for give an even ground plane.
stranger things have happened though ;-)

Yes, I'm a little surprised too.

The body doesn't work as a reflector but essentially becomes a part of the antenna system so reception and transmission is better when the body is between the antenna and the radio station, or, in the case of two-way, the other vehicle.

It's the reason why I use a ground plane independent antenna for a bull bar mount.

Couldn't be Doppler effect, Shippy? How fast were you going? :P

Doppler effect. Why a siren sounds higher pitched when coming towards you than it does going away. Now, if you were listening to an AM station and travelling at the maximum speed of the mighty ML, about 150,000km/h, you would have been able to hear the difference in the sound through your radio as the radio waves frequency was apparently compressed. ;)

Try this: tune in to an AM (not FM) station that you know is a fair distance away and do it with the back of the car pointing in the direction of the station. One of the Sydney stations maybe but choose one where the reception is not really good. Slowly drive the car around in a circle until the front is facing where the station is transmitting from. Theory is that you will lose reception, or it should get worse, at least. I can do it with the in glass antenna on the Pajero, but that wouldn't have the gain that one of these would. It used to be really obvious in previous vehicles I had when I had a gutter mount 27MHz antenna for the CB.

I'm just interested in whether these antennas are good enough to pull in a signal when everything is against them.

A little OT I know, but just as a matter of interest, the radio reception in my MQ GLS is significantly better than it was in my Pajero. Stubby roof mount antenna on the Triton, compared to rear side window glass in the Paj.

There is a local station which transmits FM at fairly low power, and I get twice as far from town before I lose reception compared to when I had the Paj.
GLS MQ Triton, ARB Summit front, rear and side bars, Carryboy canopy and rack, Dobinson heavy duty suspension, Harrop rear E-locker, Drifta drawers and a few other bits and pieces.

Ok after driving about the central coast last week (the5th)..
I found the reception on am and fm has improved sum what I'd say 50% the signal strength has doubled...on FM...and on AM stations the signal strength on 702 and others 2ue and 2gb has improved 100% as I have never been able to receive these stations from the Southern end of Lake Macquarie ever..not that I listen to those shock jocks...as FOR DRIVING AROUND IN CIRCLES....their was a hint more background hiss when I'm pointing away from the stations as you predicted...but negligible....
