ML GL steering wheel upgrades?

Postby theozsnowman on Thu Mar 10, 2022 12:05 pm

My young fella has picked up a 2007 dual cab 4x2 and the steering wheel is knackered... im wondering if a MN or newer steering wheel will fit and do i need to replace clock spring and anything else?

he wants to fit a android head unit with reverse camera etc and would like steering wheel controls, so would a newer one with these fit up? i would figure id need loom wiring for the controls but what about the cruise and phone controls on the newer ones will they swap across to the older setup?

currently he just has a single din radio in the dash

I think the newer wheels should fit. I was thinking of doing this to get away from the dodgy airbags.

The problem I see, is getting one with the airbag still on board.

The steering wheel will fit.

The faulty Takata airbags were still being fitted in 2013 and later so get one that's been replaced.

Chances of the vehicle having the wiring for steering wheel controls are slim, especially if it's just a GL. IIRC there are a couple of looms necessary. May be able to get these from the donor vehicle but some of it connects to the ECU and that could be a problem.

Replacing the clock spring is a good idea.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?
