Crown wheel & pinion interchangability - MQ

Crown wheel & pinion interchangability - MQ

Postby 1nutt on Thu Jun 18, 2015 8:35 am

My local dealer isnt much help... I'm ordering a new MQ but hate the gear ratio of the manual. But no Cab Chassis available here in auto so I have to buy a wellside for 5k extra..

Question is: anyone know the diff ratio of the manual and could it be swapped out with a lower gear set from another model.
I cant find anything aftermarket

All manual diff ratios are 3.692, in comparison autos are 3.917 (same as MN's).
Still unsure if diffs are the same and ratios can be just swapped, will be watching with interest...

MQ DIFF GEARS??
Does anyone on here no if the MQ uses the the same third member, diff centre and gears as mn/ml??
Very curious as the new 6 speed manual comes with the 3.69 diff gears.
Many gear options for larger tyres.
Can anyone on here confirm if the diffs will swap about?

Thanks

3.692 seems very tall for a 4wd?

Crown and pinion interchangeability.

Postby DENTED on Fri Oct 07, 2016 11:00 am

Hi all.

I realise general discussion isn't maybe the place for this question, but I have asked in drivetrain specific and haven't received much info. This section receives a lot more traffic so hopefully will produce a bit more info.

I have an mq triton manual dual cab, for the last year, trips away I have had 265 75 16s on and the standards for daily duties.
With the 265s not happy at all with the loss off 6th gear and low range sucks.

I am looking at heading down the road of 285s with geared diffs.
4.1s will be perfect and be back to almost standard.
Can anybody confirm before I rip my diffs out that the crown and pinion from a ml 3.2 glxr will bolt to my third member and centre, front and rear and fit within the housing.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. Heaps of info on gearing mn's etc but couldn't find anything with mq's.

Cheers.
Josh .

DENTED, I've moved all your posts on this subject into this thread, which is where they should be. Please do not cross post. It doesn't get you any more responses, except from a Moderator who has to clean up the mess.

You need to accept that the MQ is still quite new and that there are likely to be very few people who will be ripping difs apart, especially while the vehicle is under warranty. So it's either research it yourself or do it yourself. In fact, you did actually get an answer from a member who noted that ARB have the same air locker listed for the MQ as the MN/ML. This would, to me, be a fairly sure confirmation that the centres, at least, are the same. Of course, there are other issues like spline counts and shaft lengths which can and do, vary.

I can't help wondering why you bought the vehicle in the first place if you already knew that the drive ratios wouldn't suit what you do, or plan to do. Then to fit a tyre size which is going to exacerbate the problem seems a somewhat strange thing to do. I know that I've said, often enough, that the 265/75R16s had a huge impact on gearing in mine. Other members have said similar.

Unfortunately, I think that you are going to be a pioneer. Maybe get hold of a diff from a wrecker and see if it will fit. If you can make it work you'll go from pioneer to legend status pretty quickly, since there are obviously others who would like to do the same thing.
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

The 4x2 petrol manual my16 Triton has a diff ratio of 4.875
If it fits, that will sort the rear out, just have to sort the front out $$$$$$

Ml and Mn Triton's had 2 different diff sizes and axles fitted to them. A 9" and a 9.5". They run different axles and bolt patterns so aren't interchangeable, and as far as i am aware there is no guaranteed method of deciphering which they had until you pull an axle and count the splines.
Trial and error will be the only definitive way of figuring out if ML/MN ratios will fit.

4WD action issue 283 - MQ Triton on 35's with 4.11 diff ratios.
Front from an MN with an auto locker, rear a tightened up LSD from an ML.
Seem they can fit, although he doesn't go into detail how easy/hard it was.
(mind you he also did a conversion from manual to auto....)

Front and rear with triton stuff should be easy, just think big picture

swap out the entire rear diff housing brake to brake

front, work out what locking mechanism the MQ triton runs and find the matching MN mechanism and ratio from a MN and swap out the diff.

no need to do crown and pinions and all that ünknown inside stuff, unless trying to go for a ratio outside the triton range, like a 4.6 or 4.9 (from Pajero) which would be too much of a jump for the MQ anyway IMO.

disclaimer- I have not done this on a MQ, and information is general- but should be an easier way to go about gearing changes

Possibly could but would mean ensuring axles same length and spline count and having to possibly pull them out and swap if not.
EG; the rear locked diff axles are different length on one side to a LSD and open diff with TC only diff..

Pulling the axles is a big operation, it would be easier straight swap.

If doing a swap I would do a 4.1 ratio ML LSD diff that has been shimmed by a diff specialist and swap in 4.1 ratio with a front locker for the front.

Then put in a switch that turns off ABS and ASC/TC for off-road use only. The codes will clear themselves after you turn back on.

What 4wd26 is saying would be the best way to achieve it all, IMO.
