MQ manual gear box issue

MQ manual gear box issue

Postby Bigfoot kiwi on Wed Jul 29, 2015 4:04 am

Hi all, i have had a small issue with 3rd gear .. The detents are soft ..( no syncro prob) Most noticable during a shift from 3rd to 4th..
She will come out of 3rd pretty much as soon as you think about touching the clutch ..also with light throttle setting if your hand in on shifter and hit a bump ( as example ) i have been to local dealer 3 times and they agree ( its far from ideal) .
They called me yesterday to tell me there is a " fix kit " on the way from mitsi.. " stronger detent springs and balls".
I am thinking that mine would be very early production as i got it and in march.. So maybe not a problem for all..

Mine is similar but livable 2 to 3rd. Might get it checked if you say there is a fix

Hi... The fix kit arrived at my dealers this week ,and was fitted yesterday..problem sorted.. All detents are nice and positive now.. Including the ”push down” for reverse.

Its a ball and spring swap.. Fitted externally .. Definatley a more positive feel to the shift.

I have put 1200km on mine now, and it's done the same thing! Noticeable mostly from 3rd to 4th, it will pop out on the slightest touch of clutch if the gear is pushed a little.. Have also noticed it from 2nd to 3rd under the same conditions.

Does anyone know if this is going to be a recall type thing, or is it only going to be fixed if the issue is raised? Does anyone know if this 'fit kit' is known of across Mitsubishi or has it been raised as an issue by anyone else other than the OP?

I have to get it up to Mitsubishi for the 1200 look over so might have to let them know. I also have the revs dropping down to 500rpm when putting in clutch to come to a stop, although this is only very brief and will rise back up to about 800rpm (with or without AC on) and idle. It also only seems to happen when warm.

The other thing is is seems to have a flat spot right after going into 3rd and 4th some times.. Not a lag, but a flat spot (almost a flutter type feeling) but will only last half second before kicking back to normal...

Not really happy with it all at the moment, but I guess it's all something that Mitsubishi should assist with, hopefully!

(sorry if this is getting off track! But I had to vent!)

My MQ gear box doesn't have that issue, instead I find it really hard to get it into 2nd, I'm literally yanking it into 2nd.... anyone have this issue? Every other gear is smooth in and out except going into 2nd.

Back in the day they were built to last, now they are built to a price or to fail at X kilometres, take your pick. :(

I just hope they sort it out under warranty without any hassles. That was the biggest appeal to going new, the warranty, and the right price! Just hope the quality remains.... I don't think mine is near the issues experienced by the OP (big foot kiwi), I just hope it doesn't get worse! Will definitely be bringing it, and the other rev/flat spot issues to their attention before the initial service so they can try sort it out!

You can be pretty confident that they'll sort it, I've had an issue with my MN being hard to shift when cold and the dealer I use was very receptive to the issue and looked into it without hesitation.

At the end of the day they only changed the oil to ATF but it did fix the problem so that's all I can ask for, in saying that the service manager did say they would change the oil, and if it was still hard to shift they would pull the box and change out the syncros, and this was said without any coaxing at all.

Yeah, I'm sure they will come to the party with it, it's just frustrating to find these things in a new car!

All good, will post up how it goes once I get it in to them :)

Update.. Done about 10000ks since the detent kit was fitted.. Gearbox performing really nice.. Nice firm possitive shifts .. And certainly no issues with Mmc"s back up and follow
Ups..the only small issue i have is that the " hill holder" is a nuicance at boat ramps.. Its release delay often means a gaurenteed stall and hard on the clutch and induces lag.I have adapted by using a 123 go..

Yeah bigfoot, the hill start assist is a pila. You can drive around it by using the hand brake as it doesnt turn on when the hand brake lever is raised.

Had the same issue. Slipping out of gear without any input from me.
Contacted dealer. Dealer installed the kit and everything was fine... for around 2 months.
Slipped out again this morning.
Contacted dealer again and they will be replacing the gearbox.
Hopefully the new one doesn't have the same issue.
Ill keep you all updated.

Mine was slipping out of third gear and was being awfully painful around town.. bitching and grinding.
Second gear is hard to get into sometimes.

Is this occurring with all the 6 speed manuals or are these 2015 build vehicles?

I'm not too sure.
Mine is 2015 plated, and it has the issue. That's about all I know.
