How does MQ transfer case engage?

How does MQ transfer case engage?

Postby jerrah on Sun May 22, 2016 11:41 pm

Without the transfer case gear lever of previous 4wd's how is the MQ engaging the transfer case when the dial is turned?

Is it another vacuum operated servo or is it electric? Or is it always driving the front prop shaft now waiting for the front diff to engage?

Does anyone know or can point to some information online?

Electric servo shifts the transfer case. Front diff on the MQ has no disengagement actuator like the later MN's. Funnily enough the new Pajero Sport has gone back to having the front diff actuator.

So I assume the front propshaft is always spinning now even in 2wd? I haven't had a chance to pull the bashplate off yet to have a good look but the service manual listed on this forum suggests that there is an actuator. Odd if they have an actuator in some markets but not here.

(Honestly after the dramas solving the blinking 4wd lights on the MK I'd love less things to go wrong)

So do the front axles on the MQ turn all the time?

Yes. There isn't a disconnect on the front diff either like the older models so all the CV's including the front driveshaft will be constantly moving.

In older Mitsubishi's the hubs were still turning the front axles but there was a disconnect in the front diff that was vacuum operated. Many people with MK's fitted Pajero manual hubs and fixed the diff so it was always engaged to get around the dreaded flashing light where it wouldn't engage.

Anyone checked whether the high/low & locking of front to rear prop shaft could be operated independantly with mods? ie have low range two wheel drive.

Can free wheeling hubs be fitted to a MQ to stop axles and front prop shaft turning?

Maybe the front axles have to turn to operate stability assistance ? Any thoughts?

The front axles have to turn or you won't be going anywhere.

More seriously, stability and traction functionality is based around braking wheels and cutting engine power.

Yeah the abs sensor ring is on the cv shaft, so even if you were able to fit free wheeling hubs (which you can't) there would be the issue of the front wheel speed sensors not reading.

Has anyone had a go at this?

So am I correct in assuming that in the newer 2.4 4N15 MR models with the 6 speed auto, The front drive shaft is always turning and the connect/disconnect mechanism is in the transfer case?
Is it possible then for the select knob to be in 2wd and the dash lights to indicate it is in 2wd, when the trans fer case is still in 4wd?
