Weird noise help

Postby mnbrodie on Sun May 07, 2017 7:21 pm

Hi I went out 4wding today noting to full on started the track with no problems in low range, then as I drove out of a rut I lost the drive to the front wheel and the 4wd light flashing so after about 2 hours of winching out of the track I hit the road and noticed a squeel like sound coming from the bit where the CV slots in to diff side, drove home nice and easy no steering shutters or brake problems just a loud squeel sound, anyone have any ideas or similar problem's

I would say you have done a CV and that is the busted ends rubbing together.

4wd light flashing is a bit of a worry though.
What side did you lose drive to. passenger or drivers.

looking at that photo, I'm now not sue that the actuator is damaged.

BUT what you have is wacked the diff real hard and the seat / seal into the diff is damaged.

(the actuator is the part with the corrugated boot, but it splits from the diff about 1" away from that seal via a pin, that connects the forked actuator to the diff (via the pin)

the damaged seal is a worry as the actuator will not be able to engage, and I have not sourced that part, nor able to remember anyone else having damaged that part on the diff.

Wreckers will usually sell a actuator, but that seal..... might have to buy the whole diff (sometimes cheaper than labour and parts at a mechanic and MMA stealer prices)

also check the wires to the diff switch, as they can sometimes be damaged/ ripped off.

So the mechanic didn't have enough time to check it out today, but I'm preparing for the worst, and checked out a local wrecker and they have a ml front diff for sale auto like mine but mine is a mn, should it fit? 4:1 diff ratio

if your ratio is 4.1 then it's a straight swap over.

just confirm that the diff looks like yours, and the ratio is correct.

lots of wreckers don't know the differences and there are quite a few iterations and ratios around.

diffs without actuator and 3.9 ratios.

if you can try and get the diff complete from side to side complete with the actuator and switch, then its a easier fitup that you can do yourself.

There is usually a sticker on the rear diff, failing that on the compliance plate is a trans axle number find that and take a picture

But I'm betting you have a 3.9 ratio

Might be wise to invest in some bash plates :o so you can go just as hard but without the damage, that definitely wouldn't of felt nice when you copped that wack :(

So a update from the mechanic getting the front drive shaft fixed as it took the impact lucky it didn't crack the transfer case, and the part that comes of the diff center I think its called the diff housing is getting replaced going to cost a bit to fix it back up but I am lucky could of been a new front diff and transfer case

Inner shaft tube or casing.

So what would happen if my diff is a 3.9 and I put a 4.1 complete diff in? Would it work or not?

Only until you put it into 4H (or 4HLC on Super Select).

After that we can run a book on whether diff or transfer case would be the first to self destruct.

When the centre diff is locked both ends must turn at the same speed or there will be breakage. ;)
