Can you get it up on a jack and assess it passively? Turn the wheels by hand in 4wd and out of 4wd. It would help eliminate some potential issues.

Bearings and brake rotors would still make noise out out of 4wd whereas CV may not. Perhaps the hit which caused the breakage in the first place broke something else but has remained hidden till now.
Keeping the shiny side up since 1984. :D

OK so I got a new diff the mechanic went to put it in today to find on the new diff the mount on the drivers side is bent so they tried to get the one of the old diff but can't get it of any ideas? Will uploads some pictures to help
