MN Triton Vibration at 1200 and 1900 revs

MN Triton Vibration at 1200 and 1900 revs

Postby LedFoot81 on Wed Jul 04, 2018 7:58 pm

Hey guys,

Been combing the forums but can't find anyone posts with quite the same issue.

Have a 2012 MN Triton Auto 2.5L diesel that's developed a vibration that shows up at 1200 and 1900 rpm specifically.

It does this whether you're driving or in neutral.

She's just had a complete major service (200,000kms) (includes timing/balance shaft belts and water pump) and the vibration wasn't there before, or at least not noticeably.

It's been few weeks since the vibration started, and initially it was quite bad but has gotten much better over time. However it now feels like it isn't going to smooth out any more.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue (irrespective of whether it happened after a service)?

Cheers,

I have this exact same issue that the mechanic who replaced belts is unable to diagnose vibration. Did you ever find out what the problem was?

How long after the belt replacement did the vibration start?

Sounds like a possible balance shaft timing belt problem. Was the mechanic a Mitsi specialist?

Over tightening the balance shaft belt is very common to the non mitsi tech, and will cause premature failure of belt, or even major engine damage

You have me worried now, could you please explain how the balance shaft belt could be over tightened. I have just done mine and I followed all the steps listed in the workshop manual and the guide sheets that came with the belt kit. Ultimately the tension is set by the tensioner spring.
Referring to the above vibrations, another possibility is the crankshaft pulley/balancer rubber has failed. I had that problem with another vehicle after the serpentine belt was over tightened.

Vibration was noticeable at low revs as soon as I picked it up from mechanic - returned it and they supposedly rechecked timing of balance shaft twice again - Told me the balance shaft runs the oil pump and could have caused engine damage. Looks like the pump runs directly off the crank shaft to me. $1630 later and Vibration is now constant under light throttle and idle. Mechanic suggested i take it to Mitsi as he couldn't find the problem and doesn't have the time or space to diagnose the fault. Cars in cars out policy

Just to add the balance shaft belt was stripped when it was handed to non mitsi mechanic but no vibrations prior to the belts being replaced

If you let the tensioner spring do its job and take up all the tension you will be alright, but it is not uncommon for mechanics (who think they know better) to give the spring a little help, and they assist the spring slightly.

This causes the bearings on the balance shaft to be overstressed and seizes the engine.

But if you just follow the instuctions and allow the spring to do all the work you will be ok

No. That is BS. If that was the case the engine would have seized from low oil pressure. The oil pump is driven by the crankshaft.

Everybody loves to slag off the "stealerships" at any opportunity, but when dodgy backstreet mechanics dont have the ability to repair or rectify their own work, they try to fob people off to dealers.

You have paid a lot of money and have got nothing for it.

Did you get a price from Mitsi BTW?

Sounds like a cog out by one tooth.

When I replaced the belts on my son's MN a couple of years ago, engine ran smooth as on reassembly.

D.d.dj, I heard enough BS from stealer mechanics to fill a Bible over the years so not specifically independent mechs. issue.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

Problem solved.
Stripped it down myself and found the balance shaft timing was out on both shafts by several teeth and injection pump out by 3 teeth.
Mechanic arranged a tow truck to pick it up and reset timing and now its all good even though they said it was no different to them. I guess if they BS enough they start believing themselves.
I pity the other customers they try to deceive that have less idea about car repairs and quality of workmanship.

Is this a job to tackle for someone mechanically minded? I would like to attempt this but trying to find a good link to the procedure so as not to stuff it up :) my MN triton has 97k on it

The timing marks for both the timing belt and the balancer belt are pretty obvious, would be hard to get it wrong if you've done similar jobs in the past.

As has been said above, don't be tempted to put any more tension on the balance shaft belt than the spring provides. There have been cases of the balance shaft breaking which causes a major oil pressure loss (shaft breaks where an oil gallery is drilled through it).

The harmonic balancer can be a bit of a pain to get off, but it is a slip fit so let it soak in WD-40 and wiggle it off by hand if it's being stubborn. Good idea to leave the bolt threaded in a few turns in case it comes loose suddenly and smacks the radiator.

Other than those points it's a fairly straightforward job.
