MQ manual gearbox issues

MQ manual gearbox issues

Postby Gamblr57 on Tue May 04, 2021 6:12 pm

G'day all,
New member here but have already read some great advice from this forum through normal Google searches.

One of those topics related to the manual gearbox popping out of 3rd on its own accord. Gearbox has been replaced twice (local dealer bypassed the detent fix kit step) even though it is out of warranty.

That issue has been fixed, but now I have a couple other issues appearing. The dealer is not convincwd there is a problem, but I surely can't be over reacting?

1. Shifting up to 2nd or 3rd sometimes results in a grinding-like feel through the shifter. There is definitely no accomoanying noise and it usually slots in but it feels resistant, like the shifter is colliding with a moving part. Doesn't occur all the time and can happen at all manner of shift speeds, road speeds etc.

2. Starting today, there seems to be a lot of excessive noises from the underside as the shifter goes into gear. Could hear it driving around but also very prominent when idling and when it was switched off.

Next step is to get a trans specialist to look into it, but if anyone has any advice or ideas I'd appreciate it very much.

Cheers, Gamblr

How is your clutch?

I fitted a new gearbox last week to a Triton, and as i drove the car in i noticed the pedal was unusual in its "feel". Customer declined any further diagnosis, so i removed the box to find a worn release bearing, signs of slipping and wear. Customer declined our offer of further investigation quite rudely, so his new gearbox was fitted along with new release bearing as it comes already on the box. When i drove the car out the gearchange didnt feel right, and the pedal still felt unusual.

My diagnosis was the clutch assembly was shot, but as customer declined, we didnt even remove it for a look.
The gearchanges were not smooth as i suspect the clutch wasnt clearing (releasing) fully.

Has the clutch hydraulic circuit been bled properly? I had a few gear "clashes" starting to happen a few years back. Good flush (fluid was dirty) and bleed cleared the problem.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!

Hey guys, thanks for the replies. Clutch does feel pretty good most of the time, might be a bit of drag in it on occasion.

And since they've done the gearbox replacement, I thought they'd put new fluid in? Possibly not, clashing is a good way to describe it.

I'll mention this to the specialist and see if he can shed some light on it, hopefully get it in this week. Thanks again
