MQ catchcan

MQ catchcan

Postby chris_s on Sat Apr 23, 2016 2:36 pm

I have just bought a new twincab MQ after trading my MN with 200,000Km on the clock.
I had the Ultimate Catchcan on my old truck and it caught a lot of oil that would have otherwise ended up in the turbo cooler, etc.
Has anyone fitted one to their new truck, and if so, is it doing the job?
Cheers
Chris

Yeah i have. picked it up as a demo with 5000km on it. Bulk oil in the IC piping. First mod, fitted a provent 200 straight away and it's all bone dry now @ 12,000km on the clock.

Hi rsv4dan where did you mount the provent in the engine bay?

It's mounted behind the battery on the intake side of the engine. I'll have to grab some pics... New phone doesn't have any

I got $15,000 for my 2010 MN (200,000KM) and paid $39,000 for my MQ auto GLS with a few extras thrown in (redarc brake controller, floor mats, headlight and bonnet protectors, roof racks).

Just got the Provent 200 kit from Western Filter for my MQ, was more expensive than it should of been but could not bothered making brackets as it is a tight fit. Used the provent on my old Ranger was surprised how much oil would get filtered out.

I am interested in this setup all so; are there any issues with warranties by removing the original pipe work and installing this setup? :?:

I ended up selling the Challenger and getting a new MQ GLS Auto, only got 1500 kms on it as yet but had a look at the breather pipe off the rocker where catch can would go and it is bone dry as yet so dont think it would catch anything.
Ill keep my eye on it as i was going to do the catchcan thing, also any one blocked the EGR electric or blank plate?

I put the blank plate on at 100km and have just hit 1800km in my auto exceed.
No dramas at all so far.

Hi triton guy, any chance of a few pictures and a bit more detail such as exactly where you installed the plate and whether or not it contained a hole to allow a small amount of gas thru, also has the service pick up on it at your 1500km check,
much appreciated

It's the one off eBay https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/131587384799

It has a small hole and the same as the one on my MN.
The blank plate comes with instructions and goes on the EGR pipe at the bottom where it attaches to the engine.
I'll try get a photo, it hasn't been in for its 1500km yet as I have been away in it but I can't see them picking it up.

The Western Filter kit has a bracket that hangs off the brake booster( can be seen on youtube or WF website) in much the same place as the MN's, my breather pipe was dripping with oil when i checked it at 1500 km mark so the catch can on at 8000 km that why ordered the kit as it take me a time to get around doing something. I have ordered a blanking plate as well. I plan to remove both when going for service so if i ever have a issue they cannot say it was because of something i put on, even though what i am doing is making things better.

Has anyone noticed a change in engine note after fitting the Western Filters catch can kit? I've noticed things sounding a little more rattley. I suspect it's just a change in crank case noise, but want to be sure it isn't something more sinister.

I found particularly at idle there is more of a doof doof sound which may be the crank case pressure resonating through the catch can

Iv just brought the provent kit, should be here in the next week, got my mq exceed auto last week 900km already, slight clean oil residue in the breather. Probably not going to put a blank in this one. See if the temp resistor stops it opening.

The gases coming out of the rocker are still hot and won't condense much oil until hitting the intercooler and the inlet manifold. Bypass the intercooler and the Provent will do the job of condensate and oil mist.
