Anyone running 245/75R17's?

Postby jerrah on Sun Jun 05, 2016 6:34 am

245/75R17's (31.5") appear to be a perfect 50mm larger than the factory 245/70R16 or 245/65R17 (29.5") and would give me an inch of vehicle height.

I know the 265/75R16 (31.6") I used to run on my last 4wd is more common but it's marginally beyond the 50mm allowed. Is anyone on the forum running this size?

Would I be better off with the additional height of a 245/75R17 or the additional width of a 265/70R16 (30.6") / 275/65R17 (31.1")?

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Yeah I did a search before I posted but unfortunately only found the above as you suggested. Being a perfect 50mm increase I thought it might be a hot size for maximum legal lift even if it's a bit narrower. But people appear to go for a lower sidewall wider size.

245/75R17 is a common size on Jeeps and Ford F150's apparently.

Lots of internet arguments about whether wider vs taller & narrower is better for sand and offroad. I assume wider is better for on road traction and thinner is better for fuel economy due to wind resistance. A narrower tyre might push less sand to get started but once you're up riding on the sand it probably makes little difference.

Because of them being 50mm bigger in diameter. They would be my choice if I had 17" rims and wanted "32s"

I would stick to a more common size tyre myself as being caught out if you blow a tyre and your spare? Just a thought

Thanks for your reply. They sound like a good choice. How have you found them offroad compared to the 265's?

Any chance you have a photo of your vehicle with them fitted?

I don't use them off road except on the beach.

I have a separate set of Maxiis Bighorn Muddies in 265/75/16 for real offroad duties.

That said, the Toyo's are a mid aggressive A/T and would be better than a Bridgestone A/T, and way better than the geolanders etc. If I were looking for a more aggressive AT I would be looking at the BFG2 or Mickey T's, or Nitto's

I'll grab a photo later on tonight for you.

Struggled to find tyres in this size from my friendly tyre dealer. Might have to go 275/65R17's and hope they don't destroy my fuel economy...

If you have an auto those tyres will cost you about 1.5 litres per hundred ks

How much per tyre roughly for them? I've been looking at the bfg's but they sure aren't cheap

upgrading tyres what size is it all worth it

Postby joelmsmith24 on Thu Jan 05, 2017 2:40 pm

Hey People.
i recently purchased a 2016 mq glx+
love the car just want it to be a bit more capable.

i want to upgrade the tyres but having the 50mm contraint kinda sucks. 55mm i think i could squeeze 265/75s.

if you were to choose would you go 265/70 or 245/75 im leaning towards the 75s just being higher. but if this would mean i was going into uncommon tyre sizes it wouldnt be worth it. it maybe worth getting the larger tyres engineered

I currently have 265/70/17's Toyo open country A/T and am very happy with them but only had them on for a couple of weeks. I did have 265/65/18's but got rid of those mags as not very practical. I have a 2" lift and it would look odd to run standard size.

Hi mate, I run 245/75/17.

They are the standard size for most Jeeps, sometimes you can pick up a set that has been traded from a new vehicle cheaper than buying new.
Jeep use Goodyear Wrangler A/T's, not a bad tyre when new but mine are deadly in the wet

thanks mate.
from what i have found they are all pretty close in price. i just wish i could put 265/75 under her without needing to get engineered

I run my H/T stock 245/65R17 for everyday & beach.
My 2nd set is 245/75R16 M/T & ET+30 rims for everything else.
(Its the one size that fits without lift; affecting handling, abs, ASC & ATC; scrub radius is only out by less than 4mm; common size; if in future want to lift and add 265/75R16 they will fit comfortably)

from what i can see it seems like anything from 245/70 245/75 265/70 are all pretty standard sizing.
i was looking at some coopers st max and they only come in 245/75 unless i want to go 265/75 but rather keep it compliant.
where as mickey thompsons are only 245/70
and bfs come.in pretty much any size so its all gonna come down to preference i guess

Why not just buy 2nd hand 265/75/16s?
7/8s wear might give you the 0.1" (2.54mm) you are looking for, between 31.5" and 31.6".
Otherwise check the new tread depth, not all LTs are 14mm deep.

interesting comment. i didnt think about it like that. i assumed for simplistic reasons they would just use the tyre sizes to see what is legal/not. Ive been looking into a few MTs most common/smallest size is the 265/75

Does anyone know if 245 75 17s would rub anywhere on a stock standard mq exceed?

I run Pirelli scorpion 265 65 17s on my GLS auto with a spare set of oem rims. As mentioned above fuel economy increased by 1.5l/100km. The grip off-road was improved heaps and more comfortable due to the bigger profile.
Couldn't justify the price premium for 245 75 17 which were close to $340/tyre. Got the oem wheels with the 265s fitted for $260 each.

Thanks guys,
I have a NON-lifted mq triton and would like to know if I can upgrade to 245/75/17 tires, up from the standard 245/65/17 tires. Without the tires rubbing on the suspension, wheelguards, rubber flaps etc...
Or would the tire size of 245/75/17 require a lift kit to prevent rubbing? Does anyone run this size on a standard triton mq? Any advice greatly appreciated.
