2015 MQ Exceed Legal Tyre Size

Postby Dasa on Wed Nov 23, 2016 10:42 am

Guys,

Just after a little advice, I am looking at changing my boots to 697's and I would like to know what the largest legal ( insurable ) size I can fit. The vehicle is stock at the moment with suspension upgrades to follow.

Thanks for the help in advance.

The information in the post by bodia is misleading.

Standard tyre on the Exceed is 245/65R17.

Since Dasa hasn't told us where he is, I'll work initially on the NSW rules which allow an increase of not more than 7.0% in overall diameter. Thus, the maximum tyre size, which is still legal, is 265/70R17.

In Qld the rules are different, allowing a diameter increase of up to 50mm. However, the result is the same.

I think you might need to check the maths in that program. 265/70/17 is a 802.8 diameter and 245/65/17 is 750.3 which is 52.5mm difference. When I discussed 265/75/16 for the MN with the licensing engineer they stated regardless of how much over 50mm it is it still requires engineering certificate or it will get yellow sticker

I see your point.

So here's the results from a different site which show the 265/70R17 as legal in NSW, but not in Qld.

There can be very big differences in the same size from two different manufacturers. I run factory size 265/65R17 and have two sets. The muddies are virtually a size bigger in reality.

According to the Bridgestone site their 697 in 265/65R17 is 776mm diameter. Would they worry about 0.6mm?

Not sure where 0.6mm is coming from but 265/75/16 and 265/70/17 require engineering certificate whereas 265/70/16, 265/65/17, 275/70/16, 275/65/17, 245/70/17 and 245/75/16 don't. Of these compliant tyres the two 275 sizes are both the tallest and the widest of the lot.
Also keep in mind the national code of practise states "The following modifications may be performed without certification if they are carried out in accordance with sub-section 2 General Requirements and the total change in vehicle height resulting from all modifications performed, does not exceed 50mm."
This meant that with a 50mm taller tyre you have increased the vehicle height 25mm and therefore can only get a 25mm suspension lift to remain compliant to the NCOP

 Should have scrolled back up the page instead of relying on memory.

725.3 + 50 = 775.3

776 - 775.3 = 0.7 not 0.6

Like said previously, it also depends on the specific tyre.
My Hankook Dynapro RT03 muddies (265/70R17) are:

Tire Diameter Range: (31-31.99 in.) = (787 - 812.8mm)

So not legal when they're new......but become legal as they wear down

Im from vic and looked into this too...
The 265/70R16 in Hankook DO NOT GET THEY ARE UNDERLAOD RATED 110 WHEN U NEED MIN 111.

As for size make sure u check the offset of wheels .... 16x8 with pos 20 offset is no good on 265 as it protrudes past gaurd and illegal ....

Best on handling and everytging else is 16x7 rim ET pos 30 or 28...
245/75R16... also cheapest tire of bunch...

HANKOOK RT03 will be fine in this size...

Curious how the hankooks r going for ya please advise... sound, wear, handling different conditions.

Cheers

Does anyone know how likely I am to get an engineering certificate for my 265/70R17's on my MQ? I have just bought it (2nd hand) and the previous owner had this size fitted. Do I pursue an engineering certificate or just bite the bullet and buy a smaller set?

Unlikely to be cheaper than a new set of tyres.

Just keep them, is a very popular size and won't attract attention.

OK, I did a bit more digging. Latest light vehicle code for tyre mods that I can find is here...
http://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/documents/roa ... ations.pdf
which gives max diameter increase as 7%.

Doing the sums to more DP yields the following diameters...
Stock Size: 245/65R17 = 29.539"
New Size: 265/70R17 = 31.606"

31.606/29.539 = 1.069975 or 7% increase.

50mm increase in this state .... 7% increase in that state .... the roads and cars are the same right? When we drive across borders it's not like the laws of physics change is it?

I will be forever amused at many aspects of how this country is governed. Then again ... there's the US.

Keep your unit neat and don't do stupid things in public and no one is going to give a rats arose about your tyres.

32" with 265mm tread doesn't look radical. (Aren't we clever with mixing imperial and metric systems?)

I could be wrong ... but I think the prospect of attracting attention from police/road safety authorities is less of a concern for folks thinking of going over the legal limit by only a smidge.

It's more: "what happens when I have an accident in a technically unroadworthy vehicle?"

The answers I got to those questions from insurance companies, as well as a cop friend who investigates road accidents involving deaths, is what lead me to stick with 265/65 instead of 265/70.
