Largest tyre with no lift - MQ

Largest tyre with no lift - MQ

Postby Plugger78 on Wed Jul 04, 2018 1:53 am

G'day,

I'm new to this so please forgive any 'newbie' mistakes!

I'm after advice on upgrading from the stock 245/70/R16 to an AT tyre. My question is on size. I looked at Cooper AT/3 265 online and the guy told me they would be 3mm too big without a lift kit. Is a 255 tyre a viable option?

I'm after some more grip for off road driving but I don't want to get a lift kit as I won't be going too extreme.

265/70R16 were the standard tyre on Challenger and Pajero Sport comes with 265/65R17 So I don't see you running into any problems fitting them to a Triton

Largest tyre with no lift - MQ

in my shop we've been working on fitting the jungle flares and bigger tyres and wheels, with standard suspension.

Biggest we can get to fit, without any rubbing is 265/50R20.

No problems on the back but the fronts rub on the inside of the mudflap when turning. We've done a mod which reduces this so that the rubbing is on the head of one of the plastic clips and then changed the clip for a lower profile one.

It helps but doesn't solve the problem. To fit the next size up you'd need to cut metal behind the mudflap and we're not allowed to do this on a new car
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

You could also go a 285/60r18 from a 200 series. It fits without any scrubbing. I tried them on mine at work. It is also 49.5mm increase over the standard 245's so still legal.

Will be putting 235/85/16 km3 mud tyres on +13 offset steel rims going on Tuesday.
I expect some slight rubbing on the front mudflaps, but should be able to modify and make for no issues.

Only problem could be that the steel bar has lowered the stock suspension more than I anticipate, or the km3 tyres are larger diameter for the same size than usual. Normally bfg are slightly smaller than other brands in the same sizes

I've upgraded mine to a 20" with Nitto Terra Grappler 265/50/20... I'm getting mixed advices whether I need to put a wheel flares as well with regards to legality here in QLD. Click to view larger pictureClick to view larger pictureClick to view larger picture

Bit of a problem encountered for me
+7 offset ROH rims fitted the Triton nicely, tread was inside the guards and looked oh so cool, BUT the rims fouled on the calipers so back a step and fit on factory alloys, bugger. Anyway it’s only a work car that’s getting 1000kms each week half on dirt so I’ll be able to change again soon enough

What I ordered

On the car nice stance

But marked the rim on the caliper

What I ended up with, easily fits but will get a bump stop and articulation confirmation tomorrow at work

That's a bummer, Sel.

I do like the idea of skinnys, however not on the standard offsets, looks silly and does nothing to improving stability. Lucky it's only a work truck.

Yes at a wider offset the tyres looked right.
In terms of skinnies the factory tyres on this were 245Click to view larger picture

Yeah that's my point, you're now using a narrower and taller tyre than factory. Seems a bit pointless unless you end up finding some suitable offsets.
