265 75 r16 tyres. Bigger Tyres Fitment

Postby MQew on Fri Dec 14, 2018 6:24 pm

Ive just put nitto trail grapplers on, 265/75r16. Everyone supposedly runs this size without troubles. Yet im getting scrubbing with a 40mm lift.

Sunday will spent chopping inner guards and removing mudflaps, shaving mm's where I can but any help, suggestions or experience is appreciated.

Cheers.

What offset wheels are you running?

For the record OP hasn't been back since 19:44 on 14/12/2018 so obviously isn't interested in a reply, or has solved his problem.

My experience is that 265/75R16 tyres should cause no problem (not even close to a problem) unless running excessive offset, which explains my question.

In my shop we've been working with a customer on fitting bigger wheels and tyres, with no suspension lift. You can see where the problem is, in this picture:

We've developed a fix, at least partial, by cutting out that section of the mudflap and rebuilding without the raised corner.

It is possible to go further but this involves cutting metal and since the vehicles we've been working on are new we weren't allowed to do that.

I'm wondering if there is a tolerance range in the body to chassis mounting ( similar to some adjustability of the tub) that might account why some seem to never have issues with a certain size of tyre whilst others have straight out clearance issues.

Is it possible to drag the body to the rear on the problem units?

It is, but more mounting points means that the movement potential is decreased.

The actual size of tyres varies by brand and model. An AT tyre with rounded shoulders might fit but a aggressive mud tyre may not. Some brands of tyres are just taller than other brands.

Wheel alignment can make a little more room

I have 265/75/16 trail grapplers, on standard offset rims and have had no clearance problems what so ever.
I had my brother's 285/75/16 on a slight offset rims (can't remember what offset exactly) and I would only get a slight bit of scrubbing on full lock, when off road.
I have a 2inch ultimate lift.

Looking at fitting Cooper AT3LT to my stock GLX. Most off road work is Noosa Northshore beach and Fraser Island, including travel to the western side. Also some local unsealed roads, graded. Alloy Duratray fitted. ECB nudgebar. Questions for the brains trusts please.
1. Will 265/75R16s fit the stock metal rims? (Will probably replace rims)
2. Will the 803 diameter fit the spare undertray recess?
3. Will these tyres fit without a suspension lift. (Aiming on doing 2 inch lift, but curious)
Any suggestions as to a better size tyre/rim combo or tyre brand for the above usage?

I'm running Toyo Open Country M/T (265/70/R17) which are equivalent to your size in a 17.

Slight rubbing with no lift on ET08 wheels.

No rubbing with a 2" lift on ET08 wheels.

I put 35mm spacers in recently and had to trim the mud flaps on the corner indicated by the poster above.

Without a lift you will probably have to trim the flaps.

Have been running 265 75 R16 Toyo R/Ts on CSA Hawk rims (+ 20 offset) for a couple of months now. Very happy with the decision. Off road grip has been impressive and the lugs seem to be good at ejecting loose gravel. Haven't attacked super soft sand yet but haven't bothered to air down for trips up Noosa North Shore and Double Island. Handles mud well.
On road there is some hum. I don't find it intrusive but definitely noisier than ATs I've run on other vehicles previously. Only downside so far has been in the wet when attacking roundabouts in the rain, unladen. Have experienced some slip and traction intervention. More exploring limits than a problem per se. The Dobinson lift kit has settled in and the early springy rebound I was experiencing seem more tempered now. No tyre rub at full articulation and the spare fits without rubbing on the exhaust.
