MQ shocks replacement for better ride

Postby BD1975 on Tue Nov 24, 2020 8:48 am

hello all,
yes Ive checked all the other threads but struggle to find specific answer.

queston... Has anyone replaced the shocks only on their MQ triton and seen a meaningful improvement in the unladed road behavior

my 2016 exceed triton suffers terrible bump steer, Skippy and unnecessary wallow on road. yes Ive looked at wheel alignment rim size, pressure etc. but like many here, are despondent on the ride behavior (and in 2020 I shouldn't have to drive around with 6 bags of sand in the back).
I dont want to add lift kits and full on aftermarket suspension kits like many post here. but my dealership made the comment that replacing the OEM shocks with mildly heavier duty aftermarket could give meaningful improvement relative to the outlay of money and the simplicity of the job (I just get them to do next service)
Im concerned I may replace wallow with harshness and be no better off
has anyone replaced the shocks (rears only or all 4) and seen an improvement in the unladed ride?

I just fitted a Terrain Tamer Kit with parabolic rear springs and progressive rate smart front springs and it has improved the ride quality immensely. If you are on a tight budget maybe you could have some leafs removed.
BTW most utes with rear leaves and no load ride rough, it's the nature of the beast.

Go see a proper suspension specialist like Ultimate. They can build shocks to suit your application, exactly.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Mate the front struts are an insult . Change them and you'll get an immediate improvement. The rear end depends entirely what load you carry or what tow ball weight you have.. Yep, see an aftermarket bloke and have them fixed.
Cheers

Mate I think my comment above need a bit more information. The mitzi is not and was never designed to be a hard core offroad vehicle or a comfortable onroad sedan. It is a compromise of a few things, a car, a ute and an offroad vehicle. It is capable of doing all three within limits . If it isn't what you want in it's current form then you will have to do some mods to make it what you want. I ahve had a few fourbies over the years and have never had one that did not need some mods to suspension to make it work right. e.g. tyres, lift kits, shocks, air bags etc. Any 4wd comes stock as a work in progress.
Cheers.

update of this post.
Based on suggestions here and elsewhere, I opted to simply replace all 4 shocks with aftermarket Ironman foam shocks and struts for the MQ triton. kept the stock springs and did the job myself. Have done 1500km now to help settle suspension before commenting here...
HUGE IMPROVEMENT.
no wallow or skip, and far less "business on the road", either unladed or with weight on tray. Tows more confidently now too. It is essentially a stiffer ride, and I have introduced mild harshness. (to describe, similar to hard tires ride), but im happy to lose 20% here for the 80% gain I got elsewhere.
If you have no interest in towing weight, lift kits, adding bullbars winches etc etc but want a better ride, replace the shocks from new- ironman triton in my case :D :D :D :D

thx for the advice here

Been looking at upgrading the MQ suspension for a while, particularly something that can better handle when towing the campertrailer. Decided on the Outback Armour kit, unfortunately Covid is severely affecting their supply chain. Was told by an Outback Armour dealer there is a 3 month wait for suspension kits for MQ/MR.

Contacted Ultimate Suspensions, gave them my Triton details and they suggested a kit that will suit my needs (fingers crossed), although Covid is also affecting them, with a 4 week delay for the front springs. They have been pretty good to deal with and answered all my questions, they also gave me a Newtriton member discount, free front strut assembly. Looking forward to getting the kit installed.
