2016 MQ Triton diff metal shavings 3-4mm

Postby Saltriton on Sat Oct 22, 2022 10:54 am

Hi everyone my first post in the forum . First of all would like to talk everyone for sharing their stories /information and assisting people with issues/ recommendations/suggestions.

The reason fur thus post is, I want to know if I need to change my rear diff in my Triton guys/ladies?

I was doing a oil change on my diff today and found 3-4mm large metal shavings parts on the diff magnet. There was about 20-30 pieces of these 3mm parts stuck to the magnet.

See attached pictures

Looks like you already are, in 3-4mm pieces.
Chris

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Is your diff noisy? If your answer is no, then it will be fine.

As for the metal you found... Have you had any work done on the diff, such as aftermarket locker installed?
Sometimes there can be metal shaving left behind from drilling the housing for the air line.

If it is the first diff oil change, i would not be too concerned. You do occasionally get large shavings of metal on the magnets when they are first changed at 90000kms.

If it is after the first change it would be more concerning, but unless there is noise from the diff its not to worry about.

These Diffs are very strong, and I have only seen issues when they have been abused heavily or drowned with water through external breathers badly fitted

Hi all it’s no issue took it to a mechanic and he said it’s rust after hitting metal
Parts with a hammer he found they rust which was brown

Changed the oil and it’s running perfectly
only thing is it took more oil than what Penrith website recommended

Thank you all
