Lots of short trips, 2135km on the clock. Getting about 650km a tank. Does that sound right

I live in a regional area so my general drives might be short but not a lot of stopping and starting and I have averaged 8.6 litres per hundred kilometres. The car is a GLX+ with only a canopy installed. I reckon that is pretty good compared to the Bride's 120 series V6 Prado!!!! The last fuel segment starts flashing a little bit over the 700km mark. It will be interesting to see what happens once I fit a bullbar.

Average measured when filling up is 10L/100km.
Wifes daily commute. Mixed driving.

Drove from Mornington Peninsula to Mt Matlock in Victoria AWD predominately as well as low range 410km trip computer average 10.6.

Stock standard except for a canopy.

On a side note the trip computer could have been done a whole lot better.
It's pretty lame compared to many other vehicles.

Cheers

New Triton Auto 4x4 - Fuel consunption while towing ??

Postby SinWolf on Mon Sep 04, 2017 10:14 pm

Hi Guys,

I'm at the point where I want to trade my 2014 2.5HP 4x4 manual for the new 2.4 Auto 4x4...

I'm towing a 1.5 ton trailer... With the 2014 2.5HP manual, I get around 6.5km/l.

Should I expect an increase in fuel consumption because of the auto ??

Thanks

580km from first tank. Wasn't gunning really, at all. Driving per TFM guidelines for running it in.

I remembered our diesel Skoda used to get 600km of city driving in its first year. Now it gets 750km.

I'm assuming Triton will similarly improve with subsequent tanks.

MQ Blackline auto with bullbar winch, roof racks and 1" oversize tires. Getting 9.5L/100 on the trip computer. I have tested the odometer against GPS and 100km on the gauge is 105 on GPS. That gives a calculated figure of 9L/100
Towing my boat is another story. 1.5T 5.2m boat towing in Drive at 100kph getting 18L/100
My old manual MN with the same tires same boat got 14L/100
The dealer recommended checking engine RPM towing and not towing to see if torque lock up is engaged or not and trying to tow in 4th.
I will update my post after my next fishing trip.

Watch that digital fuel gauge. Can appear to have more fuel than actual as it can just suddenly drop a bar. Got caught going to Broken Hill, thinking I had half a tank when suddenly the gauge dropped.

2018 MQ GLS Auto, 265/65/17 KO2s, Summit bar, Roof Racks,

7800 kms
around 10L/100Km around town according to display. Varies a bit depending on terrain.
Best on a trip out by St George 8.3L/100 (only me, the fridge and minimal luggage) mostly flat road @100kph.
Found it changed a lot depending on fuel load. One tank from a small place non major station, it jumped to 11L/100 and could rarely get it under. Next tank (on the same trip) from a Caltex returned the above 8.3L/100.
Dealer service manager reckoned in the 9s around town. Could be right for a standard car.

I think it has improved as the Ks increased, at least around town. Off-road the other day and doing a lot of low-range low gear stuff it hit 15L/100. But we are talking steep climb out of a valley in the Brindabella's (Canberra) where low second was the highest gear most of the time.
Will see once the winch/sidesteps/bash plates go on and it gets some more Ks.
Economy is not the best for a 2.4 diesel I think. But it is what it is. Colleagues D-Max was much better until he modified it as we all do, now about 10.5L city driving.

If I was towing I would invest in a lock up kit. May do anyway for off-road. I have had what I believed was the auto temp alarm go off on me off-road when I left it in "drive". Better to sports shift it.

Has anybody else been caught out by the (not very obvious) low fuel warning?

I'm the sort of bloke who only fills up when I have to... On a trip you have to think ahead but around town I usually wait for the low fuel warning and then find a place to fill up. In every other car I've ever owned, mostly with a low fuel warning light but in some cases an audible alarm, I've never not noticed the warning as soon as its come on but a number of times in the Triton I've looked down and seen the display flashing and I've had no idea how long for... which can be a little concerning.

yeah, the fuel gauge is quite ordinary. Not granular enough for me. I need to run the car out one day to see just how far we can go once it starts flashing. I always reset a trip counter each fill up and watch how many k's I get on a segment. Always more on the first one. Then have a fair idea when the segment should start flashing.
Gonna be interesting when I fit the larger tank.

How accurate is the dash readout. I ran the tank low for the first time ever accidentally. Coming home on highway close to home I decided to chance the fuel tank range and when it started flashing on the dash it showed 90k left. Felt I could make it easy and and then it started the fast flash showing and The FILL NOW display on the dash. Something seemed wrong as it seemed I was runnnng out of fuel way too fast. Rolled into servo about 3 k later. It took 66.5 litres on what was now apparently a dry tank. Either I have a 68l Pajero tank or The dash is showing an empty tank when there is still about 9 litres left.
Anyone else run their tank to empty test mileage on tank or accuracy of fuel gauge. 7 litres can make a big difference at times if you're planning a trip, or getting a bit low and decide to trust the gauge.
Cheers.

Have done a couple of tanks now and cannot see how this is not a 68 litre tank. Unreal.

2017 GLX+ Manual, relatively stock.

40,000km odd and I always get below 10. Usually 8's. That's via computer but based on the range and fill rate seems about right.

Mix of urban and highway driving - commuting. No really heavy loads - garden waste, bikes etc.

I'll have to check next time I go camping.

2018 GLS auto, 26k on clock, canopy, drifta drawers, about 75-100 kgs of camping gear otherwise bog standard.

yesterday i drove from Brisbane southside to Bribie went up the west side via the inland tracks out on to the beach on the oceanside, drove north as far as you can go. Then back to Woomarim maybe 40-50 kms total sand tracks and beach work then drove home. 7.4 on way up, rose to 12 when getting off beach down to 10.3 pulling in my drive. Filled up today (from brimming it yesterday) working it out properly was 10.2 for whole trip.
going to work up the motorway and back 22kms each way at 100kph plus the usual shopping trips etc average around 700 per tank at 8.5 litres per 100ks

Pretty interesting reading here, thanks.

Something interesting I've found is even though the speedo might be out by 5%, the odometers are usually pretty close to bang on. The non-gps speed fed out of the OBD2 port is also very accurate as well. Providing stock tyres and pressures are maintained.
