Dies while idle but restarts fine 3.2 auto

Postby Carl71 on Mon Oct 03, 2022 12:19 pm

I've got an 08 3.2 triton that keeps dying when I idle longer then 10 seconds, at random. It starts back up fine as if nothing happened, mostly happens when cold but also happens when at operating temperature. Fuel filter is relatively new and new scv has been put in and I've also cleaned the intake manifold.

Any help appreciated,

Thanks

I'd start by checking that the hoses at the fuel filter are clamped tight. I put a second clamp on each line.

Other items worth checking I include MAF & MAP sensors, air hoses are all clamped properly, electrical connections around the engine.

Ive checked hoses and not noticed any leak, seem tight. i will put extra clamps on this evening. no smell of diesel inside engine bay either.

cleaned MAF and Map sensors, air hoses are fine. and checked electrics and saw nothing noticeably off.

I've bled the injectors to see if that'd help which made no notice difference.

I've noticed that when it does happen (usually its in park and I'm out of vehicle and it stalls. however if I'm in drive and at idle standstill, it runs on about 400rpm on instrument cluster, gas pedal does nothing when pushed down.

ive plugged scan tool in with no codes.

i also got the following reading about fuel/air from scan tool (I've got a cheap scan tool so I'm not sure how accurate these results are).

At idle
Manifold pressure 97Kpa
revs 700
MAF 19 g/s
Fuel Rail pressure avg around 30000Kpa

Cheers

Only other things can suggest is EGR stuck or going open at idle, which could dilute the cylinder charge. Alternatively the throttle valve might be closing.

You could trying reseating connectors on MAF, MAP, SCV and the ECU ( disconnect battery first ).

I have egr blanked, never had an issue with it.

Will try those other ideas and see how things go

I've tried cleaning sensors and their plugs. Still have issue present.

When I park overnight on a level surface I don't have an issue. At work I park on a slight incline which almost always gives issue. Typically only have it happen within first 5 minutes of engine running. If that helps...

Read another post that had similar issues related to electrical issues.
Today it happened then I restarted it, I then put lights on and started putting windows down as soon as I started winding windows down it died. Not sure if it's a coincidence but could a failing alternator or battery cause this. I noticed voltage was going down <13v.

Thanks

Were lights and windows activated while on the incline?

Incline suggests fuel to me.

Something clogging pickup in tank?

No just parked over day on incline. I added a non return valve to fuel line by tank. Mary be worth taking it off and checking pick up?

90% of time issue is at startup, a blocked pick up would affect it all the time at idle?
Ive ordered another fuel filter to try that first however the current filter is quite new.

Would a failing injector pump cause any issues like this?

My ml has around 340k on it and I can't say I've experienced anything like what you've gone through.

Just another thought, have you checked the fuel cap?

It's possible the relief valve might be clogged.

I'm pretty sure it's fine. May give it a blow out to be sure
