Changing 2014 MN Triton diffs to 4.3 MK diffs

Postby Greg.Paterson2017 on Mon Jan 14, 2019 8:35 pm

Hey there fellas!

I currently own a 2014 MN triton
I'm looking into changing out the diffs to a lower ratio of 4.3.

I understand that the MN model has be fitted with both 9 inch and 9.5 inch diff housing.

Mine has 12 bolts around the housing so trying to figure which one I have

Also looking for information about doing this mod if anyone else have successfully done it

Cheers in advance fellas!

Diffs from a V6 petrol ML will do the trick, if you can find both front and rear. The bigger diff has been successfully fitted to the smaller housing so the reverse should be possible.

Search for posts by fraz91 and have a look at the build thread by 4wd26. Both have information which might be useful to you.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Hey NFTF, you say the ML V6 petrol will work.

What about the 4.9's out of the MK V6 petrol ?

12 bolt is the 9.5", the 9" has 10 bolts

Earlier MN's with the LSD had the 9", 10 bolt carrier. Changed to 9.5" 12 bolt when the LSD's were phased out.

I'm not sure whether ML's with the LSD were 10 or 12 bolt, someone who owns a ML might be able to clarify.

As far as I'm aware the front should work but I don't know about the rear.

4.9 is a huge change - you'd need to be running very big, as in HUGE, tyres to make that work.

Cheers NFTF, not really an option for me, just know a guy who is selling front and rear MK diffs for pretty cheap, so got my mind thinking 8-)

Based on my calcs, you would need a 37 inch tyre to get a 4.9 to work properly

The LSD I sourced for my 2013 MN was from an ML, it’s 12 bolt.

How big a lift do you think you will need to fit the 37's without scrubbing?

Pretty sure most guys running 35's have 3 inches in suspension, and 2 in the body, with a diff drop, and aftermarket UCA's

So i would say 37's you would need ALOT

Actually come to think of it, the ISUZU concept X cars have 38 inch tyres, and they have 7 inches of lift.

ALL ML 4x4 tritons had the 9.5" 12bolt rear diff, that includes the petrol and diesel

petrol diff ratio was 4.3
Diesel diff ration was 4.1

pajero and tritons from the mid 90's have both 9" and 9.5" rear diffs so just find one that suits in the ratio that you want.

My ML triton was 4.1 and is now 4.6 diff sourced from a Pajero, which I also used for the rear disc brake conversion
Getting Out There
Sucks to be you, glad I bought a 3.2 :o
