Intro. Stock ML owner. Time to start upgrading.

Postby Bones79 on Thu Jun 06, 2019 8:50 pm

Hi all.
Have owned a 2008 (MY09) ML since new and have never made any mods from stock. Even so it’s served me well on beach and Fraser tracks (full extent of my off road experience) but now would like to do some more 4WDing and think some upgrades would be worth it. I’ll be looking for advice on where to start and what people think would be the best place to put my $$$ to improve on and off road performance.
Thanks in advance.
Mick.

The mighty ML
Recovery hitch for rear, Under vehicle Protection, suspension upgrade.
Recovery kit, snatch straps, shovel, tyre deflater etc
How much money do you want to spend? Maybe catchcan, snorkel.
Unless you are lucky enough to have the premium V6 petrol in which case no 4x4 accessories needed as its unstoppable, just need a long range tank and 10 x Jerry cans to keep it fed.
Start with a stock photo, so we can see it evolve.
Life is what happens while you are busy making plans........

Evening Mick,
As a proud ML owner they are a great unit for getting out and amongst it.
Regarding mods the best place to start is suspension, and in my experience don’t go a generic budget option to save a few hundred, I did at first and yes it was great on the paved stuff, but the teller for me was off road.
My mods to date with pricing as best as I can remember
Tough dog 2inch lift (foam cell) $2k fitted
Recovery kit $200ish (4x4 supacentre has deals all the time)
Under body protection was around $600 (had them fabricated, long story)
Tyres around $1500 (they have done close to 90k so it was a while ago) 265/70 fit without a lift
Uhf 200-700 all depends on what you want/need
Thoes are the basics to really get you out there in my opinion the limit is really on your budget
The one massive thing I will recommend is a MN centre console, I got sick of not having an arm rest, I picked up all 3 pieces for $120 and it fits straight in, took me 30mins to fit it.
Definitely put some photos up of your build, something I wish I had done.

have a look at my build thread, lots of mods done over the years.

sorry but most of the photos were on Photobucket & I had to close my account when they wanted to extort ridiculous amounts of money from their account holders.

Thanks all for your replies. I’ll get pics up soon. Took the ML in to Ultimate Diesel at Geebung last week for a chemical clean and retune. Came away with 35% more power and 51% increase in torque. Dobinsons monotube suspension gets fitted next week. Figure those two (big money) jobs are a good start.
MattEH I love the idea of a MN centre console. Will look into that.

Ummm, I'm confused, ML320 V6 petrol has to be a Merc?
I had same money pit, sold for 10% of buy ($550 unreg).
Now have 2011 Triton dualcab with a 4 person camper fitted on, (made by Talvor for Apollo) 2 1/2 mths into a slow lap of Aus. with wife & daughter, some issues, have occasional blow of 7.5A Trans fuse, results in 2nd & rev only, no speedo, gear select display, & "skid display" on. (will happen if low selected downhill then move to 2nd)
Cheers, John
