What did you do to your Triton today?

My gearbox went poopy today, so yeah, merry f@%$ing Xmas to me!!

With only two more day of work left, you'd think the mighty Triton could've waited! Oh well, it's getting old.

So good old third gear went bang last Thursday and I've been limping it around till today, when finally, it's no longer drivable. Luckily I did find a second hand box for it on Saturday, so hopefully I'll get it all swapped over tomorrow.

Been a few things over the past 2weeks, had a rear leaf spring u-bolt come loose which then broke the springs centre bolt, which then lost the axle wedge, which then put the tail shaft into the side of the fuel tank, luckily the tank not split... yet.
And to top it off, I just noticed one of the front struts leaking oil, again... thanks Ultimate.

Sheer luxury doing it on a hoist. How long did the Op take?

Yeah the hoist makes it easy for sure, I wouldn't be without it these days. Triton gearboxes are certainly one of the easier boxes to get at, took me about 6hrs, not rushing it. This included splitting my transfer box off and onto the new.

I was nearly going to buy the super select transfer box with it and upgrade, it was sitting there begging me to take it but in the end I just reminded myself that I wasn't gay enough.

A few of the bell housing bolts are a bitch, even tilting the drive train to the max. I ended up putting a hole in the passenger footwell to get at one.

Didn't consider swapping in a six speeder of some sort?

Nah I'm happy enough with the 5speeder, I think it's a great little gearbox. I'll probably pull the old one apart and rebuild if parts cheap and available, think it's only third gear syncro.

The bellhousing bolts at the top are no trouble if you use a few long 1/2" extensions with a uni on the end.

Wasn't the third gear synchro prone to cack it in these?

Had a 84 VW Caravelle once where a needle bearing broke down and the debris took out the whole box.

The hardening on the Syncro hub was non existant, and the ring was able to chew its way into the hub eventually

Always seems that a relatively small component spoils the day!.

It'll be interesting to see how all the electric vehicles go in the next year's. So many think the days of maintenance are virtually gone and reliability will be tops.

Our crappy Australian roads are going the shake and vibrate the units. Voltages in the traction systems are going north (probably to cut weight in cabling and motors) which brings a whole new raft of stresses.

A car which carried a driver and half a tank of juice most of the week will have a heavy battery whether it's charged or empty. Wheel bearings and tyre wear will have to increase.

I've digressed. The ole VR Trity will solder on. Ha ha.

Must check the rear brakes, I've had a set of new shoes, waiting for the buggers to wear our for about 5 yrs.

Electrical connections to the traction batteries and motors are suspect. You are right in thinking that many think they will be maintainance free, but the reality is that they still have servicable items.

Mitsis plug in Hybrids have to have all the traction cable connections retorqued every 2 years, and along with brake fluid changes at the same interval the cost per annum will be similar to a ICE vehicle.

Headlights.

Well, finally got to fitting some eBay special replacement headlights that I bought a year or so ago.

Both units installed fairly easily. When it came to connecting the left hand headlight globe the plug couldn't reach the globe properly.

A bit of inspection revealed that the globe was installed upside down. It turns out that the mounting face on the back of the reflector was molded incorrectly.

This means low beam actually directs the beam upwards. The globe will possibly fail prematurely as the shield in the globe is now above the filament instead of under it. The light doesn't meet the ADR.

After considering options, I decided it was Dremel time. The globe now sits correctly. Just have to clean out dust from the matching and hopefully will have clear lenses for a few years.

The beams are shite and the one with the correct globe mounting seems to be optically set for left hand drive.

Looks like genuine will be on the list when I win lotto.
