Factory Canopy weight limits

hi Guys

Does any one how much weight a standard Mitsubishi canopy can safely carry

Ive seen a few guys with roof racks attached to the side rails on factory canopies

I was wondering how much weight i could put on a roof basket

You'll probably end up with a fairly generic rail mount. Here's a link to the instructions for what Rhino Rack calls the CXB rail mount:http://www.rhinorack.com.au/rhinoweb/rhinodata/instructions/parts/legs/cxb.pdf

I used to have these on a Subaru outback that has a similar longitudinal rail setup on the roof. I'm not saying they'll definitely fit, but it will be something like that that you're after.

If you go through the canopy thread you'll probably be able to find the people who have those canopies and if you then click on their sheds you may find details of any racks people are using on them.

With most manufacturers you choose your feet and then its up to you to choose your rail profile, be it heavy duty, sports or what have you. Not sure where you are located but in Sydney ARB at St Peters have the biggest range of Rhino Rack and Thule gear that I've seen anywhere. Or there's roof rack city on the north side and there's some big place up near Newcastle where Daryn bought some roof rack gear. All depends where you're at I guess.

So are these just the weight limits on the rails, or the actual canopy itself? How do people then put roof top tents and the like above the canopies, especially factoring in weights of 2 people and the tent itself, amongst other things?

I've see one or two that have reinforced the inside of the canopy with a steel sub frame to allow them to carry larger loads like roof top tents, but the short answer is they don't take heavy loads like that std.

At least Triton's don't and I can't see how any fibreglass/plastic product would?
It is the travelling sideways/back and forward loads more than the static loads that would do the most damage I think. For static loads they would probably rate double what they do....but on a car they wont be static unfortunately.

I was looking at my factory canopy today to try and work out how to remove the rails and fit an internal frame to support the extra weight of a rack etc, when I removed the led light to look in the roof lining to check out how the rails remove, I found that there is a 1" steel frame system under the canopy roof lining which runs down to the tub rails. So I should be able to just unbolt the rails and fit a rack straight to the canopy using the existing holes. The load sticker says 50 kgs, but seeing the rail system It would take a lot more load then that easily.

Yeah a good find, Ive been trying to work out how to fit a frame for ages I should have taken a better look earlier Its a MN oem canopy with a grey carpet type lining.

Hmm, must look at mine. As I said in my build thread, I have a RTT on my canopy for over a year now and no dramas so it must hold the static weight ok.

Do some searching it's been covered extensively here...I don't recomend the clamp on type with rubber feet...for anything other than a surf board...some guys with kayaks have had they're roof dented as a result so 50 kg would be the upper limit..
The next are rail mount and 200 kg is the upper limit...I had a roof top tent with two adults and found with 180 kg the roof flexed..
