Overheating

Postby Barney2803 on Wed Dec 12, 2012 7:03 pm

Hi guys,

Need some advice. My ML is getting close to overheating when I tow at the moment. I've only owned it for 9 months and haven't really towed until now. Firstly with a caravan then a 6x4 trailer and then the ski boat. Going up hills the temp gauge rises to the red and although it hasn't overheated yet I've had to slow a lot and put the heaters on the cool the engine and then baby it for a while. Also the air con isn't doing a fantastic job.

I went to a radiator place today and thru were useless really. Said best bet was to replace the thermostat and see if that changed anything but really didn't think the radiator would be blocked.

My brothers d-40 of the same age had an almost totally blocked radiator only a couple of weeks ago so of course I reckon it's that.

I do have large lights on the front, bull bar and winch but also a snorkel.

Any thoughts from the gurus?????

Are you running genuine Mitsubishi coolant?
I did hear of a triton who had a block radiator from using a non genuine coolant.
It didn't end nicely either. :o
I'm not sure if it was a ML or a MN that had the problem.
Other than that.......do the obvious......radiator cap and thermostat first. ;)

Check the radiator for bent vanes as well. These cause those exact systoms.  Also, make sure the core is clear of grass seeds, mud etc.
I'd rather have a full bottle in front of me than a full frontal labotomy!

The problem Mattz speaks of is when the genuine coolant is mixed with another type of coolant.
It apparently clogs the cores.

I would suggest check as Greedy has said and a good flush through the whole system and replace with fresh coolant.

Well I am going to upgrade my radiator as the stock unit is a very small single core, I think hot coolant would flow through too quickly and not cool sufficiently, perhaps this the case with all the Tritons.

Don't ever forget they are built to a budget and probably not designed for the Australian summer....

I have had mixed coolants before

Found out after I cracked the radiator at scenic rim it was 30-50% blocked (can't remember exactly) The coolants apparently mix and turn gelatinous...

My temps were going up without towing, would hit 115-120deg going up hill at 110kph but like yours would come down if a backed off.
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

I've towed a 2tonne caravan for several hours through 38+ degree heat with the aircon on and the guage hasn't moved from 'normal'. Regular radiator seems up to the task in my unit. Thanks to a breakdown ( hilux with a car trailer) on the F3 on this day, a fair bit of the drive was in heavy stop/start traffic. No problems.

Barney, is it Auto or manual??

On the 09 ML Tritons, they have deleted the auto trans cooler for some reason, I can easily get the temp needle to rise if towing up hills etc.

Trans cooler is on the to do list......when I get around to it

Is an 07 auto. It's only doing it when towing which makes it harder to eliminate issues. I can't exactly pull out the ski boat one day and the 20ft caravan the next and take them to work and back.

I'm on holidays now, so might have to do some towing to try it out, but I wanted to get it sorted before we go away in January.

Ok, so it should have the trans cooler, I know Snowies 08 auto does......

Assuming you have the same auto box as mine......do you turn overdrive OFF when towing?? That makes a big difference ;)

Hi guys
First time post on the forum, I have a 2010 mn and all of a sudden I’m having over heating issues when towing up hills. I’ve had the ute since new now has 113000km on it never had any dramas before I’ve had the radiator flushed and cleaned and new thermostat, no signs of any coolant leaks I did have a tune done about 6 weeks ago could it possibly have something to do with that but the guy is adimeant that it’s mechanical also my mechanic wants to put a new rad in but I’m not fully sure that will fix it, any thoughts would be appreciated

Let me find the thread title...

"Has your MN engine been replaced as a result of overheating?"

Have a read of that.

It's a known problem, read through other thread about engine replacements and some dealers are fixing outside warranty.

if its hasnt already gone .take the pin out of the thermostat or find a thermostat that has the little pin and take it out so its getting some flow around engine all the time makes them run 8-10 degrees cooler

If it had a coolant change it is possible it didn't have the air in the system bled out properly. I suspect a lot of dealerships managed to kill a lot of engines because of this. It isn't a speedy process.

Agree. Also a good reason to fit a thermostat with a jiggle pin or a hole.

being a factory recall I would think they may still do it out of warranty ?
I would be asking (or just book it in for the recall and act dumb)

mine overheated once, I sent it in they did the "recall " thing of stonger coolant and higher pressure cap. few months later and it overheated again, took it in the rang an said "very sorry bad news, we have to put a new long engine in it" was no issue at all went without a car for 2 weeks and got a brand new engine that I didn't even ask for. This is why I love Mitsubishi, they have always been good for us

good luck
