Storage behind rear seat

I was considering the possibility of fitting a recessed compartment in the floor above the exhaust when having a crawl around underneath last night. There is heaps of room above the exhaust pipe. You would have to convert the seat to tumble or something like that.

I like the storage setup in the Colorado and the way their back seat works.

Using behind the back seat also depends if you want to use the child restraints for your children, or grandkids.
The child restraints provide good anchoring points if kids seats are not required.

Have compressor, 2 x 20ah batteries, 12v extension leads, air hoses behind mine, and it still has plenty of room. GLX model.

Pictures of Rear Seat Cavity Setups

Postby lukey10 on Mon Oct 27, 2014 7:13 pm

How's it going fellas

Picked up my new glx triton 2 weeks ago and love it!
And I'm chasing ideas on how I should setup the space behind the back seat.

Cheers,
Luke

Snooozy wrote:The aux batt system is almost complete (I might re-wire part of it in heavier gauge wiring later). It also has a 100A circuit breaker so if there is a short with the cable on the chassis part way it will protect both batteries. I have fitted the Ctek DC-DC charger as the main component & have anderson, cig lighter & merrit plugs all fused separately. I have rewired the UHF to also use the aux batt for power. While I had the console/dash out I fitted a voltmeter in the dash with a changeover switch, this allows me to monitor the charge in both batteries. A BlueSea batt changeover switch also allows me to feed power back to the main if it gets a bit low & needs a kick. A merrit plug on the solar input side of the Ctek allows the connection of my solar panels (these are quite large & normally charge the van batteries on extended stays) I will look at smaller panels in the future.

The fridge mount table is now complete with the fitting of tie-down points. I used Black Widow fridge tie-downs to secure the fridge. It is a large fridge (Waeco CF80) & takes heaps of space but this fitting allows me to open the lid fully to get to the beer ;) . When I had it sitting on the seat it was very hard to get the supplies out as it sat so much higher.
My kids are all older now & dont usually go on trips so the back seat is not really needed, it is just 4 bolts to re-attach it when needed. The system will get its first try out in 2 weeks on the high country trip. We are planning on crossing the Simpson next Sept so we need to make sure it is a reliable system.

I then mounted up my compressor behind the seat, fits in perfectly though I have to move the seat forward to connect the airline, annoying but at least I won't set the seat on fire when the compressor heats up.

close up of the self tapping screws, i don't think one can mount this without dismantling the unit, unless using nuts and bolts perhaps

all in and working, this was the fiddly bit, getting the mounting screws in, but it is possible. I had to take off the air filter to get to the most inaccessible screw, the front right one.

currently i only have it powered from the croc clips going to jumper leads to the front battery, i might get it hard wired when i get a auto sparky to help hook up the rear second battery

No lock, I'm afraid, but I have merged these so that it's all in one place.

Nice compilation of ideas there! Makes me wish I didn't have the bloody wind down window. Such a waste of space.

1 set small TRED ramps
Air compressor (not hardwired though as don't use it all the time+use it for other items)
Puncture repair kit
First aid kit
Small tarp

Behind the back seat I store some dried mud from when I drowned it....I'm also assuming there would be numerous lollies/pieces of biscuit etc from the kids over the 5yrs
It's a great storage area if you don't have to remove child seats first

Yep, the child seat makes it hard to use the space, although I really like the idea of the aux battery sitting behind there!

Shit, The damn window. that's why I haven't any room. I was looking at some of the pictures above thinking how did they fit all that into there. :(

Some nice stuff there. I'd like Juzz to come and re-wire my car please. That wiring is so neat and tidy even Quinny would ask him for tips.

And that pioneer box looking thing from Ghilly67? Wow, I want to know more about that.

As 4wd26 suspected the image of my ARB compressor is not the current look but in this company I would be embarrassed to share the current look to be honest. What I have done is to add a lot of dynamat under the plastic trim, dynamat under the rear carpets as well and install a slimline sub on the driver's side by cutting a chunk of the trim away and screwing to the steel in the rear wall. No jack and no wheel winding tools back there anymore.

Oh and I changed the manifold on the ARB compressor and added a stainless braided hose (for heat) and ran it out under the rear seat to the footwell so I don't have to move the seat at all to access the air connection.

The pioneer thingie looks like one of the sub and amp's in a single box

I dont have anything high tech behind mine, just recovery gear, first aid, tools and tiedowns, still most of it gets used pretty often so I'm not about to take any out.

Storage behind rear seat

Postby motoz on Wed Oct 29, 2014 9:18 pm

There's a mod over on New Hilux where the guys have been using netting on the seat back with shock cord to store soft items etc.

I've got some netting at home though have never gotten around to it. It's on the list...
