Has your MN engine been replaced as a result of overheating?

Anything Triton related

I gradually lose a little bit of coolant over a few weeks in summer, a consequence of relying on an electric fan.

One problem I see is the overflow bottle is possibly too small and it's overflow allows significant evaporation.

Looks like I may need engine number 4. Triton is in for a stress test today as engine number 3 has started spitting coolant out of the expansion chamber. ( Tell tell signs )
Engine number 1 cooked at 59k. (long motor fitted)
Engine number 2 failed the stress test after 14k. (short motor fitted)
Engine number 3 has 30k on it.
Had the car new since 2013 it is now 2 years out of warranty. Never missed a service so hoping if it fails and needs yet another motor they will replace it due to it being a manufacturing issue.
Just had call from mitsi, it passed stress test but they will keep overnight to do it again with a cold engine.

Update to follow.

Tell them to shove it.... You want your money back as unfit for purpose it was bought. You are the original owner, so you have lots of pull against them. threaten with court action.

Was gonna wait and see what the outcome of stress test is then go from there. I have spent thousands on mods so money back would leave me well out of pocket and I'm fairly sure they wouldnt reimburse me ha ha.

Yeah but how many engines are they gonna put in it? And at about $17000 for a new engine if they decide to pull the plug you dont want to be paying that.

Yeh fair point, if I don't get the response I want I'll definitely get some legal advice and go from there.
Thanks for your input Dibby.

Update on stress test.
Two days of testing to be told it passed stress test, outcome is suspected blocked radiator with small leak, apparently mitsi no longer able to conduct flow test on radiator but can replace with locally sourced item for $666. I have contacted a local radiator specialist who will perform a 4 hour flow test, for wait for it yes
$50. I will then return to Mitsi with the written report, and by the way very confident the radiator will pass the flow test with flying colors.I know the tell tell signs of a pressurized engine and have no doubt my cylinder block is starting to pit.
Update next week following radiator flow test.

Just joined the club. It's a 2014 MN which I've had from new. Have just got it back with new long motor. First overheated after 70000 km while I was away on a trip. I rang my mechanic who got me to do a few tests and concluded that it was a blown head gasket. Put some Nulon Gasket Repair solution in the radiator and managed to get it back to Sydney. Took it to the dealer and it failed the pressure tests and they took the head off and sent photos to Mitsubishi and they approved a new long motor under warranty although car was about 5 months out of warranty. Did take nearly 5 weeks for whole process and no loan car because it was out of warranty. But there was no argument, they just went through their (slow) process and did the right thing in the end. I am concerned about the number of new long motors which are reported blowing up in this forum so going to trade it for something new either a Triton or Isuzu DMax.

As suspected radiator had no leak or blockage, got the specialist to replace the radiator as the old one was out and 7 years old.
Have since returned to Mitsi with the report, service manager who is a decent guy has given me a lone Triton while he contacts Mitsi to gain permission to remove the head and check the block.
As I had previously stated looks like engine number 4.
Update to follow.

We need lemon laws in this country.

If a vehicle has more than one series defect or a repeat of a major defect, like engine problem, the manufacturer should simply swap the vehicle or your money and costs refunded.

People don't hand over their 'cash' to start a torturous journey of not enjoying their acquisition.

Time to write to you're pollies ( who are having a whale of a time on our taxes) to get some action if they want to return to the trough next time.

I have seen at least 5 cases where this has happened with Triton owners. I have also seen a couple of cases where the engine is totally flogged ( not through overheating ), rarely serviced and the owner has tried it on to get new engine for free, and these ones went to Arbitration and were thrown out.

Hey all quick update. My Triton finally failed the stress test, my dealer phoned me to ask my permission to remove the head and check the block for pitting. They stated that it was 5 hours work and if they found the expected pitting photos would be sent to MMA and a good will request made on my behalf for a replacement engine. I of course said yes.
I immediately phoned the ACC for advice , they directed me straight to consumer protection WA. I was advised to seek a guarantee that if a new engine was fitted it would be reliable and last the life of the vehicle as expected, if not a new vehicle be supplied equivalent to my purchase back in 2013. Consumer protection stated they would 100% take my case on if a favourable outcome was not forthcoming.
I emailed my service manager at the dealership stating the above, he replied to my email to let me know he had forwarded it on to MMA.
Within an hour he called me back to say the regional manager had contacted him and to ask if I would accept a lone vehicle supplied by the regional manager, and an engine with a guaranteed revised cylinder block and revised head gasket. I stated as long as the guarantee was in writing and if the engine failed again I would without question receive a brand new top of the range vehicle then yes.
The service manager finished by promising a speedy plan of action to get my engine replaced and my Triton back to me ASAP.
Please bare in mind my Triton has never missed a service at the dealers and in fact even the intermediate 7.5k services were carried out. I know over kill but that's working in my favor now.

Only one?

Australian Consumer Law is a very powerful thing but it generally isn't necessary to have to threaten action. MMAL have been almost exemplary in their handling of this issue, replacing engines even out of warranty and generally supplying loan vehicles while engines are being assessed and/or replaced.

This is engine number 4 for me, with only 105k on the clock. Whilst I wouldnt disagree with the service each time they have replaced my engine it is worth noting they had my vehicle for 8 weeks on both the previous occasions. Also I had to cancel family trips that had been planned well in advance so a massive inconvenience.
The reason I contacted consumer protection is because the dealer had already mentioned my car was out of warranty and it may not necessarily get a replacement engine. I needed advice on my rights and this certainly did the job.

Yeah I think if this happened to me I wouldn't be accepting another replacement engine... actually, I would have traded the vehicle in after engine 2 failed.
Wtf is going on with all these dud replacement engines? It's now 2020 ffs! You give them the opportunity 3 times to fix your car and they keep stuffing it up. I'd be absolutely furious.

Its unfathomable how some utes have 1 replacement, and others have had multiple. They (MMC) are looking into the problem, and there has been talk of stray current flowing across the deck exacerbating the pitting on the block surfaces being a major factor behind the issue. I beleive that there is another factor causing the issue, as i cant beleive MMC would allow us to fit faulty engines for the last 5 or 6 years. But this is at MMAL level and us grunts who have to deal with pi$$ed of customers are basically kept in the dark.

Hey Dibby, are you aware of this revised block face and head gasket the dealer has told me they will be fitting to my truck?.
After my letter to the dealer the area manager got involved and that is what he has told them I'm getting.

Thx Gubbs for your note to the cooling system service campaign thread..I'll transfer over to this thread...

Update:
After many attempts to ring the mitsubishi national number 1300 131211 (given to me by the dealer)....being on hold up 20 mins or never receiving a call back when I selected to "book a call back" I finally managed to speak to human being on Tuesday 10 March......I gave the details and he promised to look into my case.

On Wednesday 11 March the dealer service manager sent me a txt message saying my car had been booked in for a service today....seeking an explanation I rang him...he said the txt was sent in error...but also remarked that Ithe gentleman I spoke to the day before was the national warranty manager and that he hoped things would get moving now.

I got advice today (12 March) that MMA will give me a long engine replacement..(thanks MMA for doing the right thing)......however although vehicle has been at the dealership for 3 weeks the new engine will not arrive until April 4th....Having read in this forum of replacement engines failing I tried to pin down some details about the new engine....no direct answer was given - just an instance that a new engine would be installed. The service manager, plainly a bit more relaxed now that he was able to pass on good news, indicated he had seen this problem many times before with combustion gases leaking into coolant system....

I forgot to ask about a loan vehicle....dough!!!....

Next step: I will send an email along the lines "Gubbs" suggests above.....I don't want to do this more than once!...

Alas Poor Yorick, I fear that such a course of action may be both unnecessary and counter to your cause.

They've agreed to giving you a new engine, sending them a threatening email may just turn both the Service Manager and the National Warranty Manager against you. Accept what they've offered and save your threats for another day, when they may actually be needed.

I am aware of the changes made around september last year. Since then our dealer has had no repeat failures, so fingers crossed for all.

Thanks Dibby that gives me a bit more confidence that engine number 4 will last.

Hi Yorick, there is nothing wrong with writing a letter as long as it's polite and to the point, it lets the dealer and MMA know you have gained advice and you know your consumer rights.

When you are at the point I'm at you are left with little option but to use this in your favor.
As for turning the dealer and MMA against you as, Now for the 5th has written, they are not exactly on your side to start with. Do what ever you need to do my friend to get the result you deserve.

No. I saw the writing on the wall before the 4D56 fiasco hit and replaced the ML with a Pajero. Driven lots but wouldn't own an MN if you paid me. That said, the MQ/MR would certainly be on my list because it proves that smaller diesel engines can work well and be reliable. From an old school, bigger is better petrolhead that's a big concession. ;)

Ok fair enough.

I have the New MR exceed at the moment it is certainly a lot more refined, quieter and car like to drive. I guess at some stage all of us MN owners will either upgrade or move on, I love my truck but if this next engine fails that's it I'm done.
