Car Speed Signal Input wire

Postby Monaro03 on Fri Apr 21, 2017 10:29 am

Hi all

I was wondering if someone can help me. I have purchased a Pioneer F980DAB head unit to install. The unit has GPS and one of the things it has in the instructions of installation is I need to tap into the Car Speed signal input line.

I have a Triton MN MY12. Can anyone enlighten me as to what wire this is so I can connect to the requested line please.
cheers

Sorry to necro an old thread but just looking for clarification.

I got a new head unit and need to tap into the VSS wire on my MN MY15.

Can anyone explain that diagaram to a dumbarse? Is that a block of terminals located in the dash that I'm looking at?

The VSS is B-01 and looks like has 3 wires, is that correct?

From memory, I found the block on the left side of the centre console in the footwell area. Basically a paralleling block with gearbox sensor input and outputs to Speedo and multifunction unit.

Thanks mate.
It looks like W-L on that diagram means it’s a white wire with a blue stripe.
Does that sound right to you?

Sounds about right. Can't remember stripe colour but bunch of white wires sticks in mind.

So this signal isn't currently available in the plugs at the head unit?

Nah, I don't think this wire is in the stock plug.
The head unit I bought has a separate pink wire to connect to the VSS wire.
Not too sure what it actually does, some people say it helps with GPS accuracy so I may as well hook it up.

All you'll get is a pulse from the speed sensor at the gearbox.

Used for your Speedo & Odometer.

If you have the RV unit, it's used to calculate things like Fuel Economy, Estimated Range, etc

It theoretically shouldn't have any influence on any GPS functionality.

GPS uses speed signal to enable voice directions.
Without it it will just show a map with an arrow where to turn.

Absolutely bizarre if that's the case. A GPS device usually calculates speeds quite accurately from the constantly updated position info.

Whereas the built in RV units don't generally have GPS ability but can only work on distance input.

So I’ve run it without the wire connected the last couple of days and noticed a couple of things.
First, it gives me a warning about the wire not being connected every time I start the car. I could care less about this.
Second, google maps does what Peter says unless I launch it from my phone. Again not a big deal but I think I will connect it up cause it will probably annoy me after a while.

If the Speedo signal allows full operation then hook it up.

Hope it all works well.

My son recently installed a third party head unit in his MR. I was impressed how well his install went.

A couple of weeks ago, he said he had to remove it as it was causing issues with his aircon, from memory.

Update for anyone else trying to find this wire.
It’s the white wire with the blue stripe located behind the trim on the left hand side of the passenger footwell.
