Temps with DP Chip

Postby ozguy7 on Sun Nov 12, 2017 5:48 pm

Hi All,

Recently installed a DP Chip in a 2012 MN to get a bit more power and it does this great.

I've noticed though that the engine temps have risen. Using an Ultraguage they sit around 88 but will peak at 94 when climbing the Toowoomba range. That is clean with no towing.

As I understand the increase in fuel pressure from the chip is probably the cause. Is there anything I can do to keep the temps down besides removing the chip?

Temps will rise anytime you go uphill - engine is doing work.

The only true temperature you should monitor is the exhaust gas

Any idea what sort of temp would be cause for concern?

Arnt, they designed to go to about 115 before the ECU kicks in?

Yeah what ag9111 said.. 94 is definitely not hot. Most sit between 88 and 92 in normal operation. And you will see temps spike to over 105 when working real hard.

Mine usually sits around the 88 for normal driving including long highway drives. Has peaked at just over 115 going up out of Tom Groggen towing camper trailer, but that was on a 35+degree day... Mate with his Hilux was at similar temps
but had to keep stopping as his auto was overheating.
If all is well within the cooling system of the MN, they're very effective at dealing with heat dissipation.

Good to know that those temps are nothing unusual.

Would a transmission cooler help at all? We don;t tow a whole lot and when we do it's just a camper trailer or small expandable caravan.

They seem to differ slightly, temps on my ultragauge;
88 @ Idle
92 - 94 @ normal run
102 highest I have seen going up a hill with 4 POB and baggage, no trailer.

Bit of an update. Towing a trailer up the Toowoomba range today. Full tub, 4 pob and the trailer weighing around 1000kg.

Cruised up in 2nd gear about 60kmh 2300rpm. We hit and stayed at 108c till we reached the top. The car temp gauge had just started to budge.

Might start looking at ways to bring it down a bit as a little high for my comfort.

Do you think a transmission oil cooler would be of any benefit?

hi there
temp in my mn triton towing up hill going over the gwider hwy towing a 17 foot caravan boat on top and 200ltr of water and more . i have had the ecu upgraded and and a 3inch exhaust and exhaust temp guage and a e guage yes the temp did go up over 102c . It took me trial and error to bring the temp down, now at idle it is 83 to 84c and towing the temp goes to 88c up hill . the raditator fitted standard is the best . I replaced the thermostat with a trogan 82 c , it did help I than took the scroud off and left the very top half on to protect hands from hitting the blade I than put one each side of the bash plate air deflectors while traveling forced air to the bottom of the radiator.
I then took the triton for a drive with the caravan and 300 ltrs of water on and was happy with the results as above. . water boils at 100c and under pressure the water can reach higher and running at the temps 105 110 does not leave you much temp before boiling excuse the spelling and good luck
