P1779 and P1298 fault codes?

Postby wildturkeycanoe on Thu Jul 23, 2020 7:47 pm

Getting both these when going up long hills towing trailer load of firewood, once with no load on. Codes are related to boost and transmission so I don't know which one to pursue. Ideas?
Has done when shifting 4th to 3rd gear (auto box) but also when I left it in 3rd. Went into limp mode every time, cleared with scanguage. Have egr blank and tuned ecu.

Update - last trip, it triggered a limp mode twice up same hill, no load on. On way back I decided to drop to 2nd gear and not go full throttle. No faults.
Now I'm wondering if the transmission code relates to a slipping clutch mechanism in 3rd gear. It's always felt "slippy", like it doesn't lock up like the other gears. Maybe it's getting to t e point it isn't holding under load anymore.
The turbo error code could be a result of the computer shutting engine down under full load, just a byproduct.
Anyone agree?

My first thought is overboost. What exhaust do you have?

Try giving it a little 'blip' every so often when pulling hard.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

I actually did do that in 2nd gear, thinking that long time under full throttle might push it too far, which stopped the fault codes. Its a "standard" exhaust, in as much as the DPF has "lost" its innards. The rest is factory, but I do have EGR blanked and snorkel fitted.
Interestingly, I forgot to mention every time it faulted, I could smell a burning, like something getting cooked. Engine temps seem fine though.

I'm guessing that you don't have an EGT gauge or a boost gauge?

Nope, I used to run my wifi OBD reader but it started trigfering network errors, so I haven't used it for ages except to clear faults. Next trip I will monitor the turbo n see how it goes. Not sure if Tritons have EGT sensors stock or you have to install aftermarket.

Mystery! Last trip I was monitoring boost and temps but nothing out ofthe ordinary happened. No limp mode, no error codes, no problem even fully loaded. Strange. Seems all is well now. Yay.
