getting rid of catch can

Postby silverstreak on Tue Sep 14, 2021 5:57 pm

I'm a female with 2008 ml 3.2 done about 130,000k's. Had a problem with surging and no power took car to a diesel service centre and they replaced SCV. My car has been remapped . I have a proven 200 catch can and was told it had blow by and that it would damage my motor and to get rid of it. Went and got a second opinion off another diesel mechanic who told me to keep the catch can and disagreed with what the other mechanic said. I am very confused as to what to do? Any suggestions

I blanked off the EGR after the cooler when I reached about 2000km on the clock. Later fitted the electronic EGR defeat as well, mainly to keep the throttle flap wide open.
Never had a catch can or crud build up.

I would ditch the can and go electronic EGR defeat and it'll be happy days.

My biggest worry with the catch cans is possible restriction to the crankcase ventilation, whick in turn could cause seals to fail. You might need to get oil cleaned out of intercooler every few years.

The oil vapour getting to the engine is no problem.
Don't let the b'strds get you down!!
