Hi king i wouldn't bother with a compressor for air mattresses they take way too long. For 20 bucks its worth grabbing a rechargeable air pump. It takes about 1/4 the time for a double airbed.

Thanks Joel.
Also for reinflating after beach driving. Most places I beach drive have a servo within 10km or so but I'd like to have the assurance of an on board compressor.
I'm planning on battery behind the rear seat so for the sake of $100 (recent thumper special) Im keen of putting in back there as well. If not only for me but maybe for some poor fella on the side of the road as well

You won't be disappointed with the Thumper, great bit of gear, had mine about 3 years and never missed a trick! The only thing I would do is get ya self some better alligator clips as the ones that come with are poo!

Has any seen, used, heard of the above compressor?
Thinking of mounting one behind my back seat. Won't be used a hell of a lot. Just reinflating tyres and air mattresses and the like.
For that flow rate at that price it is tempting.
Or should I just bight the bullet, stay safe and get the arb one?

I have two of them. Sitting on the shelf waiting for someone that I can give them away to. The flow rate is in their dreams.

Had them in the Triton and they did the job ok but there are better out there now.

Hey 5th! If they're just taking up valuable shelf space, I'd be happy to adopt one when I drop the car in for the touch up. (shall be calling this week to book it in).

Bought a Thumper MK11 from 4wd supe centre. Got it with some tie downs, tyre deflator and dirty bag for $160 i think it was. Pretty happy with that price.

Compressor seems solid, i believe they are just tigerz11 compressors re-badged.

Had a quick use of it, pumps up fast and easy to use. The pressure gauge is a bit cheap though.

Time shall tell but happy with it so far.

My old blue tongue is still working OK after buying it in 1992.
Getting a little slow compared to the new models.
Set up the spare as a reservoir (run 70psi in it), and can put 10 psi in all 4 tyres almost as fast as a servo.
Just bought the ABR pump, seems a good one.
But it pulls 35 amps compared to the blue tongue 9 amps, so obviously working harder.

Air Compressors

Postby furious on Sat Dec 30, 2017 7:59 pm

Hi, My cheap $90 ebay special air compressor broke in two this week after 4 years of easy labour.

I'm looking at what other air compressors people use.

I'm particularly interested in the ARB units as they are rebuildable though slightly more expensive. They seem to handle pumping tires from 20psi to 30plus psi better in reviews that the cheaper alternatives, and that's what I use the compressor for.

I know you're looking at higher quality stuff but SCA are having a special at the moment and their compressor has had pretty decent reviews.

I mean it's SCA stuff, make of it what you will. But it's not a bad price and something to consider.

Yes, I understand. I looked at that SCA until this morning.

But from $100 more I get 2 years warranty, a rebuildable compressor that is direct drive from the electric motor. No sintered or plastic gears to break, which happened to mine. From what I can tell all the chineseium units use a reduction gear and a small piston to get the claimed volumes and why they don't do so well as the units made like the ARB compressors (direct drive off the electric motors) in the tests from 20psi to 30plus psi.

yes, the 4wd driver super center comp is what I had before but I had the big boys or bad boy (the sticker fell off ages ago) brand.

It's tempting with the recovery kit for $200.00.

The unit county pointed to is a bit light on specs, but what struck me is the boiler plate suggested it sucks 90A. Probably a typo, however the power lead only looked good for around 10A.

The AOB unit snooozy listed looks the goods, proper specs and looks all metal construction.

Ultimately, the intended use should dictate what's purchased. If you're doing lots of reinflations on a trek, a unit of 100% duty cycle would be desirable.

The problem is that they're all grossly over optimistic on their specifications.

For example the Thumper claims 300l/min but they forget to specify at what pressure. I'd suggest barely more than atmospheric. I have a 3hp compressor in the shop that puts out 390l/min, but that's at a working pressure of 145psi. Obviously the Thumper wouldn't even go close and they neglect to specify free air delivery which is supposed to be the standard for compressors. Note also that maximum amperage draw for the Thumper is a HUGE 90A.

As for that little AOB unit I don't think I'd like to test a 100% Duty Cycle. Also note that at 30psi the capacity is only 1.5cfm. But they shout out 200psi, because it's a big number.

As with any compressor, a bigger cylinder and higher torque motor, operating at a slower speed will work better than a tiny little thing screaming its head off (maybe literally). Watch maximum current draws - as with the Thumper they can be a lot more than can be supplied, especially through the barely adequate cabling that is usually supplied.

sorry, I don't get on very often these days.

I used to have a build thread with lots of pics but Photobucket screwed thing up when they changed their setup. I deleted all the photos & my account.

I will have a look for some pics & post them for you.

I have a tank & the compressor mounted on the tub wall (RH side above wheel arch)
