Just ski bars alone can cost around a litre per 100.

Ladders also murder economy, but the biggest influence is the weight in the tub.

I've put a 42" Stedi light bar under a set of rhino racks.
Have dramatically noticed more fuel consumption.

I'm still looking at a way to fit a removable air dam/splitter on the front to reduce air flow under the vehicle for road use.

The Yanks are gaining significant economy with their big rigs, eg RAM, Ford & GM

Hi Guys

Did an experiment with my MN Auto. If you have one you will notice the engine often tends to labor a bit in top gear before kicking back. I figured this might be a good thing as lower revs means less fuel.

However did some experiments. As soon as my engine showed signs of laboring, I manually kicked it back a gear.

The results was I got better fuel consumption..,,

Doesn't matter whether petrol or diesel, a lighter loaded freely running engine should deliver better economy as the turbo can also run more efficiently and optimise combustion.

Its that constant battle between a reasonable load on the motor, not slugging or revving the guts out of it.

I find with the 3.2, it delivers best economy when I can keep it around 1800 to 2200rpm with light loading.

Came back from a 1200k round trip to taree on the weekend. With the rack off, MAP and MAF cleaned, i got 10l/100 which is better than i have had in a long time.

Driving was mainly 110 highway, aircon on FULL BALL the whole way, and it was 41 degrees outside.

The triton did it with no fuss at all. Checked the coolant overflow about 200k from home, was the same as when i left, so she coped with the heat and the drive very well.

I was told that any engine is at its most efficient at the revs at which it makes its most torque, sound feasible to me
so at what RPM does the MN reach its peak torque ?

Just got my best mileage this week since I bought my ute (2nd hand) in June 2015. 714 Kms from 60.14 litres. Two reasonable trips Ballarat-Bendigo return and Ballarat-Melbourne return including stop start traffic on the Westgate. Mine's a 2013 mn manual bog standard with a canopy and highway tyres running 40psi.

Over the last 2 years I've averaged 9.4l/100kms.

MN turbo lag? What lag??

I'm averaging 10L in my MN. Stock no accessories, a few tweaks 200kg payload. Not bad for a 4 speed auto. Pump my tyres up to 40psi (bit bouncy) keep the windows closed, look for hills and drive like a granny, I get 9.5
As long as I'm getting 10 or under I'm happy as Larry and his wife Barry. :D

I'm reliably getting 950km off 110L which works out at about 11.5L/100km. It has roof racks, bullbar, awning and steel canopy.

I can only expect this to worsen when I get it closer to what I had in mind when I bought this rig.

Was not getting more than 400 from a tank, over three services from two different dealers, and two other dealers with complaints about the lack of power and poor economy, had no results they tried to blame poor servicing , bad oil, sludged motor, etc, etc, decided to have a go myself, did an extra oil changa with a flush, using synthetic oil, cleaned the sensors , and put in the egr delete mod. next trip averaged 11.3 lp 100k
Still not great , but hoe another fush and oil change will improve things further.
BTW also ran wynns fuel injection cleaner in a tankful, and changed to BP fuel.

I did a round trip from Canberra up to Gold Coast, Brisbane then over to Fraser island for 3 days and back to Canberra for a 2 week holiday with the family last month, just shy of 3400k's worked out to be 11.1/100k with the fuel I put in,dash reading was showing the same most of the way,not to bad considering pretty loaded for a 2 week holiday with wife and 2, 7 year olds, big 110L esky in the back also, manual, xrox bar, winch, snorkel, canopy, tjm rear bar, 265/16 bfg ATs,full set of bash plates, sitting most the way on 115km/h gps,bit lower economy through road works but bit higher on Fraser island,11/100 was the average for my round trip, pretty happy with that and for the gear I was carrying. :D
