G'day Ag9111, last 3 fills have averaged 9.85 to 9.9lt per 100k for MN 4 speed glr auto. Vehicle is stock standard with ARB canopy only extra.

G'day All,

I was getting 16.97 l/100km across the Simpson Desert 4weeks ago.

We travelled from Birdsville to the Knolls turnoff, then did the rig road to Purnie Bore, Dalhousie and finally to refuel at Mt Dare. I took 111 litres for 654km. We did have an additional 70km of detours because of water.

9.6 ltrs per 100, first time I checked which was yesterday at 1700k's. All highway driving, manual MN turbo diesel. Can't see it ever going below that.

Fruity curious, whats your average speed on those roads? I havent spent much time at 100+, but according to wonder trip computer (relatively speaking given its inaccurary) consumption seems to climb significantly above 90km/h..

Hi Mac,

I will check what the computer says is the average speed but I would say for the 120k round trip atleast 90k would be spent at around 100kmh, some at more due to 110 limit on some parts of the highway. I really do not have to slow down at all most of the trip.

No canopy yet so car is bog standard inlcuding factory tyres.

This information is really interesting. Took my new MN auto out for it's first highway run Friday night. Cool and clear conditions all the way and the odometer had just over 1000kms. Two adults, one child and gear in the tray (covered with a carryboy canopy and running 275/70/17 Cooper ST and the best I could manage driving like my grandmother was 12.5. Most of the time the meter read closer to 15!!

Reset the meter for the trip back and managed 11.4 but still not really happy about that. Cannot figure out whether the OSD gives a measurement for the current trip or entire history?

Any ideas on how to lower the fuel consumption?? I know I have an auto and tyres are realistically too aggressive, but everything esle is stock.

Sit on 90-95kph will greatly reduce fuel use. My 3L Patrol used 14L/100Km at 100kph, 11L/100Km at 90Km. My 4 speed MN shows similar figures 12L/100Km at 100kph, 9.8L at 95kph and 9.5L at 90kph.
I have canopy and drawer system and run on BFG 265x75 R16.
If you think the lower speeds take for ever to cover distance, the difference between 100kph & 95kph is only 5Km in an hour (that is if you can retain the speed for the full hour, not being stuck behind a caravan, etc or on winding road). If you and your mate could stay at such speeds, the difference in time between reaching a place is only is only a fraction over 3 minutes in an hour. In three hours a matter of only 9 minutes (then its time for a break and a coffee) and you have saved yourself 6 litres of fuel.

Last week I got 9.1l/100km travelling between Gundagai and Sydney. Cruise control set at 110km/h, wife and two kids plus a tub full of luggage.

Even I was quite surprised. :D

Just got the best mileage ever yet!!!.
10l/100kms, this after two refills after EGR was blocked, I used a fuel treatment from Lucas, probably it helped too. This used to be 11liters every 100 kms. from first kilometer.
I already bougth a second bottle of lucas fuel treatment. What first surprise me about this Lucas thing, was that iit was not a ligth liquid as I have seen most additives.

hey guys.
only filled up once so far, got 9.01l/100k's, 90% city (well, perth suburbia, if u wanna call our big village a city  ) and a bit of freeway (50k's at 140-160km/h) -yes i am german  and no we have no speed limit on the autobahn 8-)
car is stock as rock with softcover over the tub. except gf and dog no luggage.
so quite happy with that so far, it's about half of what my patrol tdi4.2 used to burn......
and i have to say that the car would make a good autobahn runner. quiet, well balanced at higher speeds and accelerates ver y well from 120 upwards (important to keep flowing with the traffic) a shame topspeed is only 179km/h  well, still enough to lose ur license here.... ;)

Have done nearlly 15000 kms in my MN. From start on stock standard glxr, I have never gone over 10 ltrs/100kms even running around town. :) I dont drive to hard or fast nor go slow, but like to give it heaps off the start and around town. Got it down to as low as 7.2ltrs/100kms on the highway  but come back up to 9ltrs on the return trip back up the range. Still really good I think. Have just put steinbauer module in and can now have it down into the 8 and 9ltrs/100kms average around town, ( mainly due I think to that I can drive around small roundabouts and sharp corners in 3rd now  and still pull away! ) but can allso take it up into the 11ltrs/100kms when driving it flat out around in the streets. I love the power though. I really think its mainly got to do with how you drive the beast. ;)

Mine is a MN GLX 2.5HD single cab with stock everything except a bull bar on the front and a steel tray (much heavier than alloy), no tarp to reduce wind drag. I havnt gone over 10l/100km yet which I am happy with. Includes probably 80:20 split highway:town.

The best I got from my ML Triton (loved that car) was 8.6 ltrs/100kms (33.0mpg). That was predominantly city cycle with some country driving. The worst I ever got with my ML, which included heavy towing with double-axle trailer was 9.5 (29.7mpg). (You can call me anally retentive but I've got the figures to prove all of my data.)

Have just got my 1st result with the MN after 85% city (Adelaide peak-period) and 10% country and 5% 4WD'ing (Deep Creek) : 779.0km, 67.13ltrs = 8.7 ltrs/100kms (32.4MPG).

In owning both an ML and an MN there is quite a few differences, and also similarities, both are great vehicles IMO. Love them both.

I look forward to doing more travelling kms in city in next few weeks and then comparing ecomony/efficiency with a two-week off-road trip scheduled for the Flinders Ranges late September 2010.

Will keep you posted. But am happy to respond to any Q's re the difference between MN and ML.

Cheers,
DW

Just got my worst ever 10.16 L/100km.
I did a long test drive from Canberra to Adaminaby on the dirt, and then home on the highway.
I fairly HAMMERED it over that dirt mountain road testing traction control on and off, and with superselect 4wd activated the whole way there.
If I can drive like that and still get just a whisker over 10 to the 100, then I'm still really happy with mine.
I just wish I could drive normally for a whole tank, but I keep using the ooomph this thing has, and so have never had the chance to test what it can do when you drive like a normal person instead of driving it like I stole it, as they say.
I love Terra Firma - the less firmer the more terror.

The MN now has 10000kms on it (diesel 2.5HP manual) and stock externally but with EGR blank and ChipIt.

Its the most consistent thing I've ever had. Best I've seen is nearly 7 flat/100, worst 7.4/100 (when I've deviated from my normal day to day usage). All measured at the pump. Man I love this thing ;)

Only used BP Ultimate since its come out...

Oh thats in 2WD too....

First tank of diesel in the new MN, for 702km used 63l, which is about 8.97l/100km. Not bad, a bit of town and highway. Going away for the weekend about 780km round trip, highway and dirt. It will be good to see if this holds up.

I have the man GLX-R (stock standard) and have just clocked over 8000 Km and have done the calculations after each tank.

Worst was 9.6l/100 when I was hauling water 1000l atm (which I was very pleased with how it drove with 1100Kg on the back)

Best was 8.4l/100 This included a round trip of 200km following a bus that couldn't get over 90k's was very surprised to see the economy on the Multi Function Centre drop to 6.7l/100

All in all I am averaging about 8.9l/100 and I'm not afraid to bury the boot so if I drive more economically I could probably get that down even further.

2010 2.5 MN Auto with roughly 10,000 kms on the clock.

Filled from empty to full with 62 Litres of fuel - got 660 kms from it.

By my reckoning that's 9.4 Litres / 100 km.

Average driving is conducted on 80 - 100 km/h highways with limited use of A/C.

GLXR Auto - stock tyres... from 37 tanks (19,000kms), average is 11.01L/100km (best 9.87, worst 13.98).

Not overly impressed, but still heaps better than my last V6 4Runner  and it does seem to be getting better with time.

If anyone's looking for an iPhone app to keep track of your usage, I can recommend 'Road Trip' - you can record your fill-ups, GPS track the servos you fill up at, enter any vehicle expenses/services, specify types of driving (highway, city etc.) I've used it since the day I picked up the truck. Very handy!
2010 MN GLXR... I shall call her 'Tray-cey'
