Postby BUD on Fri Nov 19, 2010 2:08 pm

I took me MN triton back to a diferent dealer to find out why I have this noise in me frontend, but when the the clutch is
down it goes away. They took a look and said maybe the thrust bearing. Has anyone had this problem.

Yes mine is squeaky too. I thought it was just mud. Interested to hear what happens. Ben

No, have not noticed it in mine  (what's a clutch?)

Seriously, it does sound like a thrust bearing.

I had this exact same problem after my first trip off road. I had only done about 6,000kms. I took it to the dealer who eventually fixed it under warranty although they said that the clutch was "full of mud". It took them ages to get the thrust bearing and was off the road for a week.

The noise has not reoccured but the clutch pedal still doesn't feel smooth when it is depressed. Have also been off road numerous times since.

Been thinking about this - when the thrust bearing is released from the clutch diaphragm spring shouldn't the bearing clear the diaphragm and stop spinning? If so, the bearing noise should only happen when you depress the clutch pedal. :?

Mine only makes noise when the clutch is out kev, and is only really noticable in neutral. But i can still hear it going slow in first/second. Im not keen on giving me car to mitsu for more than a day, it shouldn't take any longer than that to fix. Part of the reason why it hasn't gone in yet.

I guess if the bearing remains in contact then putting pressure on it may stop the noise whereas with no pressure and still spinning it can rattle around a bit.

Hmmm, been hearing a noise on and off but though it was one of the pulleys. Mentioned it to the stealer when I had the 15k service done and they couldn't find anything.
Recently discovered that it goes away when I press down on the clutch. Happens at idle and can hear it when decelerating 1st or 2nd gear at slow speeds (going from speed bump to speed bump).
Looks like another trip back to the stealer but this time armed with some more information about it. Thanks guys.

No squeak in mine but do get a bit of transmission hammer when warm wile idling. Quite normal. Mine goes dead quiet when the clutch is pushed.

Bud
It definitely sound like a thrust bearing problem used to get it on the prime movers on the steel sites but could normally cure it with more grease in the bearing. Only way to properly cure it is to take the box out and replace the bearing, but if it still fairly new and not many k's should be a warranty job.....

Kevin
No the noise is the bearing when it is off the pressure plate, when pressure is applied it locks the bearing as such , stops it freewheeling.

Adam
The bearing can not be misaligned if you clutch is working, as it is held in the clutch fork arm normally by spring clips. So if yours is making funny noises or seems to have a judder then possibly one of the clips have given up.

So there are more of these :(

Just noticed mine has a squeak now and I am presuming its just dust. What were the mud in bearing scenarios :?:

WD-40 to the rescue perhaps :D

My problem occured after driving through numerous muddy puddles and a few river crossings. I wouldn't say it was heavy mud.

I am aware that you should not change gear whilst driving through water as you can run the risk of sucking water into the clutch.

The dealer did say that this is what was the likely cause for the dirt getting into the clutch however they still fixed it under warrantly as the vehicle was brand new and I argued the point that I knew not to change gear whilst in the water.

I've got it happening as well and it only started after my first muddy outing. I'm pretty confident I've never depressed the clutch when crossing water but obviously mud is getting flicked up and getting in during gear changes along tracks. Maybe a guard could be build to deflect it a bit.

I'm just going to WD-40 the crap out of mine and see if it stops.

What kind of damage will be done if its left squeaking, I'm assuming early clutch failure??

i don't think so, i had it on various cars and on my old trusty ford escort for about 6 years before it was to old to pass the emission tests...not even made it to age 10....:( but the clutch was still fine (and annoying)

probably a bit of a tangent but has anyone had a problem with going through water (400mm-500mm) not changing gears and then turning the car off and then not being able to use the clutch because it has stuck to the flywheel, this has happened to both me and the old man with all the recent water up in QLD with our ML's the fix was just to depress the clutch put it in 1st or reverse and then hitting the starter till it started then evenually broke free from the engines torque releasing it.. bit of a concern was the old man only went through 150mm of water/ large puddle
COME ON FULL NOISE!!!!

Just be careful remember there is a clutch plate in there that does not like anything oily causes more problems and if they found out its $600 plus labour for a new clutch......................................

I had a squeek pushing clutch in in my MN. I took it to Zupps in Mitsubishi at Mt Gravat. They pull it apart and said water had got in the bell housing and caused rust on the pressure plate. They cleaned and lubricated it. It wasn't meant to be under warranty but they said Mitsu accepted it and covered the labour. Props to Zupps, first time I had dealt with them and they were great.

So my question is how do I stop water getting in?? I never drove through water more than 15-20cm and a stack of sticky mud with water in wheel tracks. Its impossible to not change gears while driving down gravel roads covered in water without changing gears.

^^not sure what they were telling you, but I'm not sure sure they would clean and lubricate your pressure plate...maybe linkages or something?

Out of many of the complaints on here, this clutch and water thing is the one that I think is one of the worst. Especially after a few trips with guys and one bloke mumbles "clutch" after a water crossing and every single bloody manual owner then pipes up and says "yeah me too"...
It has to be a design issue and it is the one they never fix under wty without a blue.

I've never, ever had water issues with a clutch in any fourby's I've owned and the work 2wd Rodeo is driven through flood water maybe 3 times a year and is a non existent problem...which it was on all cars I presumed.
I hate to advocate drugs, sex, alcohol, violence, or insanity to anyone, but they’ve always worked for me.
