With brushless stepper motors at each wheel would offer much simpler ABS and all the other acronyms.

A diesel gen set with battery storage can be a powerful and efficient combo as the diesel can be tuned in peaky high output zone.

Unless the motors were very light, I don't think I'd want one on each wheel. Maybe at each diff or electric motor, s axels to each wheel but I'm dreaming...

On the front wheels the motors would replace the brake rotors, calipers some of the Knuckle's metal, so the difference in weight would be similar or possibly lighter.

Similar situation would exist for the rear end.

A huge benefit that could be made possible by placing the drive/braking unit at the wheel is huge wheel travel, as power doesn't have to be transferred via shafts and CV joints, etc.

Couple this with active suspension and you have ultimate traction and ride.

The overriding factor is battery capacity and cost.

Bloke I spoke to at Mitsubishi told me that they plan to have most or all of their vehicles available as a plug in hybrid eventually.
I'd love a plug in hybrid triton....

In vic yes.
Currently 70% of Aus power is from coal, here in Tas its hydro and wind, about 14% nationally from solar.
Emissions wise, an EV running off brown coal is similar to a petrol car.
Running off the average power mix now in Aus it's slightly better, running from renewables like in Tas the emissions profile is zero and the energy use is around two and a half times more for the petrol car.
Local emissions in the city are of course zero for EV.

A nice compressed air backed electric would be nice. Complete with a packet of seeds to plant a tree. The real reason for global warming. Not to mention all those nuke tests.

Hybrids may have a place for use in populated areas, but how will they fair when the 'green' 4x4 owner takes their first trip into the high county or into the outback? The electric component would run out pretty quickly and then just become extra 'baggage to haul around with the cans of extra fuel to make up for the smaller fuel tank.

Don't forget to load up those solar panels. Hope it's not a cloudy day
