Possible New Hybrid Triton

Can't see it happening in the next 5/10 years. The 2014 may will be the last of the true Tritons though I guess.

Thoughts?

Like the tub design, those rear lights are awesome. Sadly concepts rearly get built to the design they are shown. Keep some of the tech and dull down the design to look like what everyone else has

Diesel AND electric...could it get any worse :(

March 5th we'll see more. I know that they don't look much like the concept cars but it's an indication of the direction they're heading in I guess.

Interesting what they said about the 20% electric by 2020.

all the big stuff is diesel/electric these days, Locos, Dump trucks, Drag-lines, ships etc. but it still doesn't scale down well to a package under 2 tonnes.

if lipo batteries become about one tenth the current price things might change.

Mmmmm, electric. 100% torque from zero rpm. :D

How good would that be in a 4WD?

Front and rear electric motors maybe? Could eliminate the driveline and get a very cool suspension, regenerative braking good for downhill control... Hmm lots of thoughts. All I need now is the winning lotto numbers.

I like the styling so far the rear lights could be a bit smaller.

agreed. although you need to keep the unsprung weight down a motor to each wheel would allow awesome control for wheeling with traction control and also descent control.

bit nervous driving through the rivers though..... :? :?

i guess the current vehicles have essentially remained the same as the first 4 wheel drives including the landrovers and toyotas just that some areas have become more refined, especially electronics but the drivetrain concept is still essentially the same basic principles. so not much change really in the basic concept in 60 years.

it's probably not the technology holding us back - it is the market. some blokes are still clinging to their 40 series like a greenie to a tree.

That thing looks way too cool to make it into production... Especially by Mitsubishi Motors

As mentioned above (diesel-electric locos) the diesel runs an alternator to produce electricity that runs the electric motors. Very different.
In ships they run diesel motors and diesel run alternators for power. Different again.
As far as I'm aware there are no diesel/electric drives around unless in a car??

What next?

eg the Ryobi cordless drill, the brush cutter, the lawn mower and then the 4x4!

You wouldn't be looking at old fashioned clunky electric motors. Instead there would be a full digital system with stepper motors in each wheel with all the conventional drive train gone.

A faulty vehicle doing river crossings will have the benefit of providing instant fish for the evening meal.

Greenies will drop down and bow to the 4wheeler in the bush........dream on.

forum of the future......questions

How many amps can i run in my new triton wheel hubs...............

Can i chip my Gennie to develop an extra 25watts...............

I want to make my exhaust louder, can i run a louder .wav file and increase the boost on the sub woofer to make it sound more like a 3 inch exhaust.............

Considering that the Federal Government get fuel excise of $17,350,000 and GST of $5,970,000 per day from petrol/Diesel I wonder where they will make up the shortfall if we all go electric?

Current discussion in a US state is to start having a higher purchase tax on electrical cars to overcome the shortfall.

Their muppets over there tho.

If we can get petrol engines across rivers, figure electric motor can't b too hard?? ;)

A company here has a Hybrid Excavator, A Komatsu 20 tnne machine. I have only heard about it, apparently the swing/slew motor is electric and the rest hydraulic....

A matter of time, I think.

I would prefer more investment into alternate fuels like water, although that will be scarce in time too...

Well if they incorporate technology similar to McLaren P1 what beast it could be ( drool)
The engine block makes space for an electric motor, which itself is no slouch, boasting 176 bhp and a maximum torque of 260 Nm, available from a standstill.

The Govt...thieving..#%^$@^ds will never miss out!

They'll introduce the Electron Tax!

Electric motors can deliver huge torque and much more controllable.

Problem is that the current liquid fuels are hard to be for convenience.

One idea for purchasing the Triton was the conventional power train layout.

If an electric solution became viable at some stage, you could chuck the engine and gearbox
and plant an electric unit on the front of the transfer case.

A small diesel gen set and battery under the hood and you could potentially have a potent
diesel electric unit.

I love to see the build thread

But your right! Imagine the huge torque numbers from that puppy.

Problem is that you get nothing for nothing. At the end of the day the diesel motor has to produce the same amount of energy as is expended by the electric motor. :(

Or, you have to have batteries big enough to store the power until you need it.

Interesting, If you had 4 electric motors, I wonder if you have functions such as diff lock or even skid steer turning?
