New Airbag Recall 25-07-2017

Postby Headley on Tue Jul 25, 2017 1:52 pm

Hi guys,

You may or may not have seen the news going around; the airbags fitted to Tritons (and other cars) after the last recall due to faulty airbags installed from factory, are themselves faulty.

A new recall will probably be announced in the coming days.

A list of affected vehicles is here:

Looks like the entire ML-MN line of tritons (and challengers).

Yep that's what they have been doing, but you cant fully blame dealers , its the suppliers who have to be held accountable and going by the report on the news, the federal Govt looks like it might step in and over rule the fix, one can only hope !!!!!!

Nothing concrete yet on whether the Challenger is affected, I've heard that of course they will be OR no they aren't ( something to do with steering wheel audio controls )

No, as the representatives of the brand the dealers are fully accountable.

They are quick to try and wrangle out of every other issue, so they have to shoulder the load on this one.

How or why this faulty airbag issue happened is not our problem.

Rest assured, if you died from a faulty airbag, they wouldn't shed a single tear over you, so stick it to them.

The weak link is the quality control at the manufacturer's point of receiving stock.

You'd think with a safety item, that a mufacturer should be performing either regular or random acceptance testing to ensure the supplier is maintaining quality and spies.

The whole thing reeks of the ole 'cheapest quote' & brown paper bags getting handed over under tables.

How else can a product continue to get out in such large quantties.?

So I've had the recall done this year, are all dealers just replacing Takata airbags with newer Takata airbags that will also need to be recalled (one the propellant degrades...)? If so I would rather just rip the damn thing out, given Takata's reputation on QA/QC.

Agreed with comment above, safer to not have an airbag compared to the faulty units, a nice momo wheel would be awesome

I had both my recalls for my ML Triton attended to on Friday 28th.
I posed this exact question to my local stealer and also to MMA Perth division parts supplier and distributor. To their knowledge there is no fault with the recall airbag parts being supplied and fitted.

The replacement airbag part is a Takata item. I pointed out whats the point of that when Takata Corp have filled for bankruptcy!

Just keep a nice fluffy pillow taped over the airbag pod!

Or wear a full face crash helmet,

Or stay in the back seat and hire a lacki to drive you around,.......

I'm do for the airbag and snot injection soon, so be interesting to see what bag lands here.

Horn bag would be preferred option.

Just wondering does anyone know if Mitsubishi will do a recall on this? I did email them and spoke to a dealer and at this point there is no planned recall.

If this is the case how does one find out what exact part number is your airbag? Also what steps can one take to fully resolve this knowing/ assuring oneself that you are not at risk.

Again I find solutions here stink as the debacle of the 2.5L issues/ solution that they came up with.....
cheers

I'm amazed how any process these days, with all the engineering, destructive & non destructive testing available, QC processes, etc, that anyone can produce millions of samples, let alone a few dozen defective products!

Well finally got the Airbag changed.

On leaving the town I noticed the airbag light was still on. Back to the dealer.

Quick mutt session and light is cleared but the error code was for the floor loom.

So new airbag & clock spring, but now got new potential fault hanging in the background. :(

Hey all ... I'm new here ;)
Just some FYI for people ... I've just had air nag replaced under recall notice from Mitsubishi, the mechanic that did the replacement is a friend of mine, and said ... It's only the "Inflation module" that gets replaced and is good for around 5-6 yrs before needing to be replaced again for free ... or until they find a suitable alternative inflater.

Hope this helps :)

I think you'll find the inflation module is the airbag. The actual bag and the gas forming charge aren't seperate parts.

I was told the replacement bag is a totally different unit/brand, esp considering that Takata is probably broke.

It will be interesting to see if we get another recall.

5-6yrs? So what condition are airbags in 10+ year old vehicles, esp considering how hot our vehicles get inside during summer?

Hello RHK :)

The mechanic that did the replacement said "He calls them hand grenades" so ... @ 10+ yrs old, I'd be carrying a face shield in the car :(
It was the Dealership that told me it would have to be replaced again in 5-6yrs ... but I agree with you, it will be interesting to see if we get another letter from Mitsubishi.

I never got this letter to start off with, I'll be calling dealership Monday morning to find out what the go is. I don't want to be driving around the country with my family in the car knowing that any of us could be killed by our airbags.

Interestingly, my son's 2009 mn hasn't attracted an airbag recall, only the snot block for the electrical plug.

I might pull off the module and see what brand it is.

Again; beware, according to the service manager where I got the work done, if your SRS light comes on, ALL the airbags and belt pretensioners are deactivated. I've been driving around for a few months while getting around to replacing the clock spring and bag with the assumption that only the drivers bag was out.

ACCC is telling consumers to not drive with an Alpha air-bag. They are asking the minister to action a Compulsory Recall.

Only 4 spoke steering wheels has the dodgy Takata airbag fault. See here for photo..

I thought it had something to do with metal shards flying out at the occupants when the airbag deployed???
