OBD reader/scanners

Hi

Does anyone have any direct experience with any of the below OBD scanners/readers on your cars in Australia?
I am not seeking info on feature differences, but rather your personal experience whether all product functions of the device worked with your car (petrol, diesel) including OBD1 and OBDII cars/4WDs.

Look like some serious units you're looking at there. More serious than I imagine most blokes here use, from what I've seen most are using cheap eBay units linked to their phones/tablets.

Is an average bloke going to get an useful info by using one of these OBD2 devices? This looks like a good price with a lot of positive reviews.

Only issue with that one is it might hit your left leg, most of us have gone for the 'mini' version for this reason ;-)

As for an average bloke getting anything out of it, it's saved my arse a few times

Having coolant temp shown as degrees, not a needle on a scale, shows you problems earlier. Checking my boost pressure, intake air temps etc is pretty cool in my mind and having the ability to read and clear fault codes saves a lot of hassle.

So yeah, the average bloke will get something out of it, even if it's just 1/4mile times
I'm not so good with the advice  ... Can I interest you in a sarcastic comment???

If you have an android phone and the torque app you can set yourself up with a few new gauges and readouts - can be fun to play with a bit. I gave up on it all in the end as I found I was just watching a million readouts all the time and if there was nothing going on that was unusual I was basically wasting my time and diverting my attention from the traffic around me. Good to have in reserve though for when stuff does go wrong.

I initially found the same thing, which is why it now sits in its cup holder mount near the hand brake.
I can look at it from time to time, along with my maps - but it isnt dazzling/distracting me whilst I drive.

I dont even bother turning it one when I am driving around town.

That's why I leave mine on minimal info, phone goes in windscreen mount and another phone is used for music etc.

Mate is the price in Euro dollars or Pounds ?

Getting cheaper anyway ;)
I have played with one of these and from what I experienced they are worth the money....

No OBD scanner comes close to a MUT3 and these are required for all but basic error codes.

Will be pounds sterling, but I think you can change to local currency too.

I tried out the free version of Torque and its fuel stats are way off with no way to correct it. Is the paid version any better?

It plugs into the OBD port, it's on the drivers side just above your left knee. If you look under there you should see an open male socket with about 20 pins in it. Most readers in use are bluetooth, and they just plug straight into that open socket. You can get slim ones that are about an inch long, just search on ebay for Bluetooth OBD2 reader or search for ELM327 bluetooth reader.

Cheers

you will most likely catch your knee on that one unfortunately if u intend on leaving it in...you can get others that are cheaper than that and around half the size..
