OBD reader/scanners

Re: OBD reader/scanners

Okay I have bought an ELM 327 and have run both Torque pro and Lite. When I run Lite it will eventually read the ECU but as it is Lite there are very options you can use. On Pro using exactly the same steps it will not read the ECU (well not within 10 minutes anyway). I have done the vehicle setup and still nothing. Are there ideas on what is going on?

Seems weird that Lite will work and not Pro on reading the ECU.

Maybe lite is holding onto the Bluetooth connection and not letting the full version connect? I'd delete lite entirely and reboot the phone just to be sure.

All ELM327 are not the same.

some cheap copies will not connect at all.

Have you tried it on another vehicle?

You need to check if it's supports your protocol

Okay I have run a few tests.

On my:
S4 phone: Torque Lite works in both my Triton and my I30.
Torque pro(after Lite uninstalled) runs, connects to adaptor but will not find the ECU. It seems stuck on the searching proto(I assume protocol)

On my Tab 4 same results.

So I believe the adaptor works. Torque Lit works.
However not Torque Pro. It does seem stuck on searching for the protocol. As above any ideas on how I find out if Torque pro works on my protocol? It seems strange that Lite works and yet Pro doesnt.

My Triton is a 2012 MN GLX.

Is there a setting somewhere in pro where you specify the protocol for it?

Your dongle sounds like its fine just need to find the correct setting in Torque pro but cant remember off the top of my head

I have got Torque to work! Beers all round! After going to the Torque forum and going around in circles on it. I still found no answer. The developer doesnt seem to want to help anyone and contradictes himself quite a bit(talks about Samsung changing bluetooth settings but cant get it through his head why it doesnt work in both versions). So went in search for the Tritons ECU protocol which is ISO 15765-CAN (11bit 500k baud). Then I just noticed a small tab on the vehicle profile setup in Torque which allows you to change the protocol. Well I couldnt get this on to work, but changed it to Automatic Fast protocol scan from Automatic Through protocol scan... and Boom I had it working on both my phone and Tab 4 (only one at a time).

Thanks everyone for trying to investigate.

I just read a post on the Amarok forum about not leaving obd readers plugged in all the time due to the metals being uncooperative with those in the obd port or something like that. I have run mine 24/7 for a year now without any issues. I was more concerned about battery drain and error codes than melted obd ports.

Can anyone confirm or bust this (myth)?

No such issues on the triton as far as I'm concerned. Had my scangauge on for years.

Another 2 years here and I had a USB dongle plugged in for about 2 years before that. Myth busted me thinks.

if my triton is 7 years old the scan gauge has been in permanent operation 24/7 plugged in for at least 6 of those ;)
no problems with the plug or signals.

might be vehicle specific problem with the Rok having a problem?

I've got three of the cheapie dongles and have found the compact ones have been the hardest to get working.

The quality of the electronics looks OK, but who knows how good the firmware is.

On top of that, Bluetooth can be a dark art at the best of times. :geek:

That's why 'Rok' buyers pay more for their rigs, because they come with the -special- more expensive -corrosion prone- obd ports....

Great to hear the stories of rock solid misti obd ports ans like you guys will leave mine plugged in an just use it. Be interesting to see if Rok owners have issues down the track.

Ok, I am in the mood to buy an OBDII reader/scanner for my ML 2008 2.5lt Twin Cab 2x4 Auto Diesel.
I prefer one that works on metric systems ie L/100kms etc, but can do in mpg if i have too

Before I do, can anyone tell me if the OBD plug is available and accessable in this model and where.
Next which one works best with an iPad2/iPhone6, and readily available/where in Australia.

Don't ask for much do I :P

I can't see why the obd wouldn't work. Check the plug is there under the dash above driver's left leg first I suppose.

The iPhone complicates things. Usually it means you will need a WiFi dongle instead of Bluetooth and it will cost more.

Best thing to do is choose your app first and then read the app's website for compatible devices.

Or buy an ultragauge instead.

Hi Guys,

Having had an error codes related to the EGR valve, thought i would get one of these OBD2 readers to connect to an app and then monitor the EGR valve's behaviour.

Bought an ELM327 of Ebay and doesn't work on the truck....

I works on an Honda CRV 2002
Works on a Renault Kangoo diesel 2006

I have tried Iphone and Android

I have used the following apps
Iphone:
OBDfacile
OBD car Doctor
OBD Auto doctor
Andoid:
Torque lite
Dashcommander
OBDLink

With all the Apps I make a wifi connection to the ELM 327, with a fixed IP, and then they connect. Then the apps try and communicate with the ECU and all the protocols they try just fail... Beginning to seriously wind me up.... whereas with the other 2 vehicles mentioned it works instantly with all the apps. The scanner runs a 2.1 version of the firmware ?

Any ideas - the scanner is this one

Try dash command or rev or rev lite on the iPhone

Just to add a couple of details that I noticed yesterday:

If I follow the instructions and plug on the ELM327 then switch on the ignition, I noticed that the central console on-board computer bit does not light up as usual and as soon as I unplug the the scanner, then the on-board display lights up and shows me the radio or MPG or whatever

Secondly if I have the unit plugged in and try to start the engine, it fires but then stalls a few seconds later and won't start. As soon as I unplug it, then the engine starts..... If i plug it in once the engine is running, then it stays running, though I still can't get the basterd to work....

I also have a traditional workshop type OBD2 scanner that scans and picks up the codes fine with ignition just on but not engine running... Its almost like Mitsu are using a weird tech language for the OBD2 that the ELM327 scanner cannot understand... However, reading on here plenty of you guys have got one plugged in and working fine.

Anyone have 2011 model (or similar) and have one of these OBD gadgets working - if so which one and what software works today?

Not too keen on paying for an app if there is not a free version to try first - Dashcommander is 10 Euros and Rev lite seems to not be available....
Thanks. Ed

Ive got one of these

Reads everything. clears codes. has a code lookup for most cars. Can't complain.
