Installing new speakers

Installing new speakers

Postby NowForThe5th on Tue Sep 30, 2008 9:25 pm

I have been keeping some pictures of developments as the new Triton takes shape so here's some info, photos and tips.

The standard speakers in the Triton are crap and produced nothing but noise (bzzzzzz) on volume 5+/50 from the new stereo. New speakers were the only solution.

There is another thread that suggests that you can use the existing mounts by cutting out the insides. This might work for 6" speakers but the ones I wanted were 6.5" so would not fit.

Speakers are Venom (from Jaycar) 3 way with 85 watt RMS rating. Now I can crank up to 30/50 before I can't stand the loudness and there is very little distortion. Cost $45/pair which is really cheap for this quality and performance.

Hope this helps any of you thinking about a similar project.

Does the vr come with down spec stereo?
I cranked my glxr stereo last night and was very impressed.
I'm no audiophile, but i do run jaycar response splits in the pajero and the ml sounds better/louder than it?

Rambo7 - 6" speakers should fit in the existing (factory) mounts. Just cut out the speakers and maybe some of the framework. Depends on depth and size of magnet.

Jop - The VR comes with the same headunit as the GLX-R and the standard speakers are adequate for that task. My headunit puts out 50w/channel so the 15w speakers just didn't cut it. The Venom speakers have very good bass, stretching the installation on the panels through which you can really feel the bass.

Sapient - There are no tweeters in the VR. The new speakers are 3 way so treble is much better although could be improved with tweeter placement up higher but this will do me.

Subi_man - The headunit is an AVC6500. http://members.optusnet.com.au/auspacks/productPage7.html

Just for peoples info, I just installed 6.5" speakers into my MN front doors.

You can mount the speakers to the front doors as per stock location, and you don't have to cut any door metal either provided you make an MDF baffle ring which mounts to the factory speaker slots with 3 bolts (you'll see).

And it all fits behind the stock door trim without modification. Obviously a lot has to do with the speaker you choose, but the speakers I fitted aren't slimline, they are pretty average sized so most makes should be ok...

Agree with that Kegsy, it does depend on the speakers' size and depth of magnet particularly. I didn't have to cut any metal for the front doors but the connection plugs created a problem on the rears. The problem is, of course, the offset between the door mounts and the trim speaker moulding.

To remove door trims, first carefully pry out the small cover which is at the back of the inner door handle and remove the screw behind it. Then gently pry off the trim with electric window switches from the armrest. There are two screws behind this trim. A further screw is at the rear of the door trim. Now pry off the trim which is held on by clips, starting at the bottom. A flat blade, like a paint scraper wrpped in a rag to prevent scratching is useful here. The clips are quite tight so need a firm yank to release. Then rotate the trim to release from where it hooks over the top, lifting from the rear first. Once trim is released, you can unplug the various wires and cable to the inner door handle.

Thought I'd bump this up as after a recent water submersion experiment to test how indestructible the stock speakers are I'll now be updating

Thanks for the effort 5th and kegsy as I now have no questions to ask ;) and all I did was search

Thanks to the help of this topic and a few pm's to kegsy I fitted new speakers to the front doors this morning.

Very happy with the outcome

On a side note the MN seems to carry different colours to the ML. Drivers side negative is blue and positive is yellow and passenger side black negative and red positive.

Also another tip is the speakers screw off counter clockwise ;) , don't try and force them off

Ken, with your notorious habits of using the Triton as a submarine  , perhaps some marine grade or submersible speakers would have been a better choice in your application.

I have buggered mine from water immersion too. Still making my mind up if to go cheap and nasty as a sacrificial or look at something more water resistant.

I doubt any so called water proof speaker will tolerate being submerged so may as well go sacrificial.

I suppose one set every two years no too bad .

Exactly my thought tony and I did ask about the marine speakers but was told not really worth it ;)

Sacrificial will do me and now the hard work is done will be easy to swap over again because we all know this will happen

The originals are paper though. Most aftermarket are synthetic materials.

You can get a rubber back to seal the rear but if going too deep I guess water could come in the front
