Light bar recessed into lower grille

Light bar recessed into lower grille

Postby Danos on Sat Jul 21, 2018 5:18 pm

Sharing some photos of how I installed a light bar into the lower grille. Due to garage space limitations I can't fit a bull bar so the light bar went in front of the intercooler. I welded some angle iron and flat bar to make the brackets.

Might help someone else with similar problem.

How are you placing the number plate?

Might be worth having lower edge level with top of grill to improve air flow into intercooler.

I've moved the plate so it is in between top and bottom grilles. There is a small amount of airflow obstruction to a corner of the intercooler but Im pretty confident it wont have any impact. The scratch marks on the left side of bumber show where the car touches the garage wall - ie no room for a protruding light bar.

Had another look and it does block a fair amount of the intercooler but I still think air flow through it wont be hampered.

Backward step in my opinion, that's the whole set up behind having the intercooler where it is, too cool the incoming charge as much as possible, Not be hiding behind a bloody light bar,
Like wearing thongs with a pair of socks , anybody can do it but why
Now if you remove it, your up for a lower grill, holes to fill
Then there,s the friggin number plate , in the end if its done with no thought as to the overall finish, it looks light an after thought, sorry champ definately not having a stab

I've had a good think about it. As far as I can tell the Intake Air Temp (IAT) should indicate if the intercooler outlet temperature is affected as the probe is located on the throttle body.

My scangauge measurements havent showed any measurable difference in temperature (around 45-52 deg). Is this logic correct?

Having a close look at the intercooler position almost half of it is already obstructed by the front bumper from factory. I guess the air flow 'wooshes' upwards and distributes air behind the bumper anyway so its not noticeable.

I am going to modify the brackets to bring the lights forward and downwards as a compromise for air flow am was keen to hear some thoughts on the IAT measurement.

Photo of current position with Stedi light bar (great product).

I have moved the light bar down after cutting the plastic below the grill away. Cuts easy if you use a hot air gun to heat up the stanley blade.

I got a replacement grill to cover the hole ive left. Its only one roo strike away from being a plastic mangled mess so Im not too fussed what it looks like.

Will it now hit the wall of the garage? I don’t think it would effect the temps to much to be detrimental, put on a bull bar with some spotties, winch and control to change airflow. Going to low will definitely give some crazy foreground lighting, see everything except the washout! I am also a fan of the stedi brand, just wish they would lower the colour temp to 4300k. Put up some night shots with the bar In action.

After all that surgery, had you considered some round units that could go where the fog lights normally go?

Still fits in the garage. There doesnt seem to be much reflected glare. I did consider fog light upgrades but it was a bit too fiddly and wasnt sure I would get enough light out of them. The Stedi bars are really impressive.

Looks like about 100m range, on the road. Similar to my low beams which don't have the huge hot spot right in front. Low mounting is always a compromise.

He'll get a good silhouette of wombats on embankments and scrub in the background.

More seriously, stones, sand blasting and just getting a dirt covering in winter, would be my main concerns.

Must be a different road crew working on the first photo, second photo road crew is run by the guy that has a perfect 100 meter bitumen driveway at home.

The second pic must be done by Victorian contractor!

I'd like to see an investigation into the corrupted/incompetent Vic Roads guys who sign off on our road maintenance. Repairs often worse than what was allegedly repaired.
