P0125 error code ML V6

P0125 error code ML V6

Postby Newtron on Tue Nov 20, 2018 9:14 am

Hi there,

New member here chasing some sage advise. My 2007 3.5 V6 ML Triton is producing a P0125 (Insufficient Coolant Temperature for Closed Loop Fuel Control) error code. It appears to occur on longer runs at about 40 minute mark. On shorter drives it doesn't appear and will actually clear its self after a few cycles of shorter trips. Triton seems to run fine when Check Engine Light (CEL) is on.

I've ordered a new Engine Coolant Temp (ECT) sensor and hope this will be the solution. Anyone else experienced this and better still found a solution?

More info. After warming up the dash board temp gauge reads steady at around half way or just over.

Another question. Do I wrap some Teflon tape on the new ECT or leave it bare - read advise to do both??

Update.

Put the new ECT sensor in yesterday with no sealant tape or paste and so far no leaks following a 10 minute test run and a 50 minute school run (I know right  ) this morning. Best result though is no CEL so far.
Fingers are remaining tightly crossed and the best test will have to wait till next week when I can try a few hour long freeway journeys.

Hope it's fixed for you.

How good are those V6's? This must be about the third time that anyone's had an error code on an ML V6. I had just two in 5 years - one when the ABS unit self destructed and one when the apprentice filled the spark plug recess with water. Engine still ran, with just an occasional hiccup.

If work is so terrific, why do they have to pay us to do it?

Thanks for the replay. I haven't had this beast long but did a fair bit of reading prior to buying a second hand 4x4. I initially thought a diesel would be the go but after reading about the more rigorous maintenance required on modern diesels and the relative reliability on the V6's (other brands included) my preference swung the way of the V6.

Update.

P0125 is back :( after about 45ks on a freeway trip today.

Not sure I want to start replacing the thermostat as surely the actual engine coolant temp isn't actually too low at 45kms into a drive on a 32 degree day? From reading the limited number of similar stories I can find where thermostats were replaced the P0125 CEL has persisted.

I've also read on another site to try replacing O2 sensors??

This is from the manual:
P0125* Feedback system Oxygen sensor not operating, engine warning lamp ON.

PROBABLE CAUSES
•Failed oxygen sensor (front)
•Harness damage in oxygen sensor (front) circuit or loose connector contact
•Failed oxygen sensor (rear)

Thank you so much for the above. I've been questioning whether or not to try replacing the O2 sensors as they're expensive little suckers. Will definitely give it a shot and report back.

Hi Newtron, did you ever find the problem because my sons ml 2007 model Triton does exactly the same and its driving me nuts as to what the cause of it is?

Hope you can help us.

Hey Angie,

Sorry, I haven't followed this up for a number of reasons but I'm ready to start chasing it again. I'm going to follow the O2 sensor route.

Here's a video I found this morning. Not a Triton but a 3.8 petrol Pajero.

Hey there, thank's for getting back to me. I would have thought if it was an oxygen sensor, it'd run ruff. Does yours seem to use alot of fuel? I'm booking mine into an auto electrician as I've had it to Mitsubishi and they couldn't find anything wrong and said so it must be dirty fuel or spark plugs so we cleaned fuel and only ran it on good stuff and changed the spark plugs but that made no difference. Please keep in touch as will also, with regards to this issue. Thanks for your time.

Hey Mate, so I took the Triton to the auto electricians and it was an oxygen sensor.

Yes, mine appears to be fixed (fingers crossed) by replacing O2 sensor 1 in bank 2 (passenger side). My local mechanic said everything looked normal but my OBDII scanner showed bank 2 sensor 1 barely working. Took it to Mitsubishi who confirmed O2 sensor was faulty along with rocker cover gasket leaking oil all over it.

I've done Brisbane to Sunshine Coast run 2 times now and no CEL thus far.

Hi Newtron, I have exactly the same car and exactly the same issue. My O2 sensors are new (only few months old). I have P0125 code and CEL comes on 40 minutes of drive, and resets after a few short drives. Did CEL come back on for you after changing O2 sensors at all?
