Remote Key Not Working - Sometimes?

Remote Key Not Working - Sometimes?

Postby Bobdel on Mon Jul 04, 2022 6:44 pm

Has anybody had a similar issue and can suggest a solution?
One of my remote keys doesn’t seem to work the first few times I wish to get into the vehicle (MN triton). It does not send a signal to the remote door sensor mechanism and the indicator light on the key does not blink. Basically it will not remotely lock or unlock the doors. It will manually unlock/ lock the doors. After having been in the ignition for some time it works OK. The other (spare) key does not have this problem. I initially thought its battery was flat, but it doesn’t contain a replaceable battery.

Battery is flat or low quality battery. Replace with correct size and type. Use quality brand like Energiser only - the cheap ones will give you the same symptoms after only a very short period. A good battery can last 5-7 years.

Thanks for your suggestion. I was previously thinking of the same cause but when I dismantled the key fab it does not contain a button battery, therefore, it can't be a key battery issue. The vehicle is a 2013 model MN and I have had it since new.

If it is a remote unlocking key (which they all are ) it must have a battery. Have you opened up the inner case and looked inside? Its black and red. CR1616 are the batteries for the factory remotes. I do not remember MN tritons ever having a non remote key

Internals are covered by a rubber/silicone cover (4 in drawing) which hides the battery.

Thanks for the screen shot. That explains why I didn't see the battery when I pulled the key apart.
I only took item 2 off and removed the full assembly 4 for a look. I wasn't aware a battery was under it's cover. It sure was well hidden.

If the fob is faulty, be prepared for a big price tag for replacement. Not sure about Mitsubishi, but Toyota charged my brother almost $600 to replace a fob that was damaged by a leaking battery. Technician told him the battery should be changed every 3-5 yrs to prevent this sort of damage.
