Any losses from the r134 have been recovered from fitting of larger evaporators, i think the biggest problem is from installation ie no condenser fan and running the liquid line next to the exhaust this would push the the subcooling into gaining heat not losing heat which would then cause higher saturation temp in the evaporator and then losing Refrigeration effect to the point where poor T.D across the evaporator would be giving u higher supply air temps and higher humidity. One day i will do a chart and see

R22 has not be phased out yet just the amount available for import into Australia it will be phased out by 2020
u can get drop in replacements for this gas and r12, a great drop in for r12 was sp34e or 34m both worked well.

R410a is next to be phased out replacing it will be r32 which is known to be flammable

i think the euro cars are trying out carbon dioxide atm the biggest problem is the pressure that this gas operates at one crash and boom.

U can thank the carbon tax for that price Bigbirdalx, i,m trying to find some r123 to repair a chiller. min order is about $20k

We just put 300kgs into a power pax chiller of r134a...glad i didnt foot that bill

Not sure about some of the new flammable gases. I know the quantity isn't great but a leak in a confined space coupled with an ignition source could spoil your day.

Most of the 'new' flammable gasses are the oldest around...basically propane with additives. This one is just the usual chemical company rubbish along with 134, 410, 407 etc

Probably the best refrigerants available now are the propanes - and certainly the most environmentally friendly and sustainable.

There's a bit of a stigma about the flammability of these propane based refrigerants. I can understand why as 300 grams of propane in your AC system is certainly frightening when compared to the 80kg bottle of propane in the boot of the taxi

Same goes with the gas piped into all our homes for heating and cooking...

Sometimes it pays to step back and have a think about things in perspective...or not

In that context lp gas in the boot isn't a worry. Propane has been used for years for fuel and as a refrigerant.

Likelihood of a problem... Negligible. Probability of shit happening in the event of a leak depends on the environment. I would prefer not to have it in certain locations for marine applications.

I have seen some petrol inboard boats that would give you nightmares. Floating bombs.

It all comes down to the expertise of the installation and the vigilance of the operator and both can fail spectacularly.

I was driving my ml yesterday and when I pulled up the air con went hot at idle. When I rev the car or drive it comes back cold again. Has anyone experienced this or know what the most likely cause would be. I have checked to see if the belt is loose but it seems fine.

There's already a fair bit about this in other threads mate, didn't really need a new one for it

Basically, the clutch fan draws air over the condenser, when this cycles on a hot day when idling the air conditioner loses efficiency and is basically useless.

Have a search for 'thermo fan' and you should find the best solution

My air has gone real warm since being off the road for 5 weeks, really noticeable
It is coldish on driver side but blowing warm air on passenger side, but even the driver side is hopeless- and it was heaps better

Thinking it may have lost gas after sitting- any checks available for levels, do it yourself diagnosis?

Other than that I may have to take the dash apart and see if something has slipped- vent tube?

I have washed out the condenser/ radiator

Need to check the belts

Anything else to check for

No way to tell gas charge without gauges, which I have (as well as the gas - ml has a 550g charge of r134a)

Sadly I don't have a vac pump available atm otherwise would be happy to sort it for you.

Should have all gear needed after the 5th Jan

Dryer should have a sight glass in the top. Bubbles visible usually means low on gas but it's only an initial indicator. Different temps side to side would indicate a problem with the vent tubes.

Some of us real fridgies have 134a and vac pumpz on them

Two lines to and from comp.
One should be hot. Other cold/ sweating. If ya real desperate im in the city mon/tuesday and might be able to help

hi,
I used the std pipe insulation i got from a air conditioning guy.. I had to cut it in half and slip over the pipe. Fits nicely.
I was going to clark rubber to get some as the stuff they have seems ok too - as long as its not the really cheap foam type , as seen in the pic...

this is the really cheap foam type that had melted from the radiant heat....
