Seriously ther air con does not work they know it and Im not sure even if they carry the equipment necessary to check it / fix it .

I agree, I think it is a specialty car air/refrigeration mechanic job.

At least you will get unbiased opinion on its performance - problem is you have to pay to have it done

Not necessarily.
How about taking it for a quote to upgrade it[to normal] and taking that to Mitsubishi?
The actual output and normal output range should be defined and they might just quietly pick up the tab?

I've found the A/C operation to be very sensitive to grass & crap in the gap between the condenser and the radiator. I pulled my radiator back and blew out a reasonable amount of grass and crop stubble - it still isn't 100% right but it made a big difference.

If anyone has been out bush a bit or driving through grass etc it could be worth checking if there is any buildup in this gap as it's quite easy for it to get in there from underneath

Cheers

Mine's as clean as a whistle but what I have noticed is no water coming from the drain pipe next to the gearbox.
Mind you it's so weak it probably doesn't get any condensation!

Mine is great, cycles between 4-6 degrees at the vent. I rarely have it on more then the 1st speed. sometimes on two if its hot and driving into the sun. :D

A mate's old Camira measured 2c at the outlet.
Do you get water draining from underneath?

They will all do that if they are operating even half effectively mate. They dehumidify the air just as much as cool it.

I haven't actually measured it but mine is definitely effective enough for me to be happy with it. 8-) The buzz box I picked up last night is sensational with respect to A/C. Definitely would register well on the nipple scale. Rather drive the triton though but doesn't look like that's gonna happen.

What I'm wondering is where the water is going when it's not draining? Mine is working but not as well as I would like and if the water is trapped how much is that effecting the efficiency?
I'll take it to an A/C specialist to get their opinion and then take it to a dealer under warranty because it's only in the last few weeks I've needed it apart from demisting through the winter.
:? :)
Just got under to have another look and the drain is wet with oil which suggests it's leaking in there. Not a drop on the garage floor but it must be the oil from the gas and a fair leak to drain out?

The a/c In my ML Is pretty good but that being said i have metalised 15% tint all round that helps keep the car a lot cooler ..
my only problem is the location/design of the airvents i tend to just freeze my knuckles off and ive found the vents themselves dont articulate far enough left right up and down.. hence why im in the process of making a custom set up.

the thing that is of any regard to me with the a/c is that i didnt think that it would suck down as much fuel as it does when its on.. considering the size of the engine...

When you take the car in to the dealer sierra make sure you tell them that you ran it on a/c at least once a week the manual stipulates that you must do this.

Just checked mine 41.6 outside B.O.M equipment 43 mitsub comp 14 degrees @ vent.
IMO could /should be better. I lived in darwin most of my life and a 37 degree day with 85% humidity the toyota's would still mesure 3 degrees @ the vent. You can't beat the Nippon Desno(i think that's how you spell it) a/con's in the toyota's(sorry don't mean to give the dark side any amo)

Thanks for the advise guys.
It's Nippon Denso, not Desno]
We have, at least I have, a Valeo DKS series fixed displacement swash plate compressor. DKS-15D

http://www.valeocompressors.com/en/tech ... dks-series

It's got the full specification on that site and the DKS-D comes in 2 sizes. 156cm/rev and 175cm/rev

http://www.valeocompressors.com/media/b ... ies-en.pdf

I would guess the double cabs get the DKS-17D but why do some work so much better? Currently close to 30c and 50% humidity and pleased to report that water was dripping from the drain hose when I got back.
:)
I've heard it said that car a/c compressors are similar in output to a unit in a home and these figures confirm that.
The one on mine puts out 5kw of cooling at 2000rpm and 7.4kw at 3000rpm. So how come it could cool a large area of a house but struggles to cool a single cab?
 :?

Sorry guys just thought I'd share this with you straight from the service manual!

PERFORMANCE TEMPERATURE CHART

________________________________________
<3500>

Garage ambient temperature °C 25 30 35 40
Discharge air temperature °C 8.0 - 16.0 12.0 - 20.0 16.0 - 25.0 22.0 - 32.0
Compressor high pressure kPa 1, 150 - 1, 400 1, 400 - 1, 730 1,640 - 2,040 2,030 - 2, 430
Compressor low pressure kPa 170 - 240 220 - 300 270 - 360 340 - 440
________________________________________
<3200>

Garage ambient temperature °C 25 30 35 40
Discharge air temperature °C 7.0 - 14.0 12.0 - 19.0 18.5 - 26.0 27.0 - 34.5
Compressor high pressure kPa 1, 020 - 1, 220 1, 180 - 1, 420 1,380 - 1,680 1,680 - 2, 000
Compressor low pressure kPa 180 - 230 220 - 270 270 - 320 330 - 390

having said that, these last couple of days with the hot weather in Melbourne I've taken to keeping the temperature probe in the truck mine stays around the 7.0 to 9.0 degrees depending on whether the engine is idling or I'm moving, higher engine speeds reduce the discharge temperature even lower to 6.5- 6.8 degrees. Still not fantastic as my VS commodore ute outperformed this any day as well as my old sorento 4WD!! (around the 2 -3 degrees)!!! Crap I've previewed this and the formatting gets destroyed but you'll get the gist!!

I thought I would throw this out there. My a/c is great most of the time, but, some times it suddenly starts blowing warm air out for no apparent reason. So it goes from ice cold to to warm, out of the blue. I bought the truck brand new 4 months ago, but, the truck sat at the dealer for a little over 10 months before I bought it. A few weeks ago when I took my truck in for a warranty issue with the tail gate, there was a upset customer there with a new truck also that needed a new a/c system. I am assuming that his truck sat on the lot for at least 10 months before he bought it as well. Do you think that because the vehicles sat at the dealers for so long without being ran that things like an a/c system becomes compromised from no oil circulating?

Only the compressor seal CW.

That would leak gas and eventually not work at all. You can check for oil around the front of the compressor.

@Sierra, home ac's will not operate below 18 C and will only get 10-15 degrees across the coil at best. They have much bigger evaporators and fans so move much more air. I don't have a clue how they rate car ac's?????

Check the one at home. Your air off temp will be higher than the trite.

My Triton is a Oct/2006 ML.

At 48,000K m.My aircon failed/stopped half way up Cape York (other half nor real impressed). On returning through Cairns the dealer regassed under warranty, but told me to keep an eye on it, as if it happens again, the lot will need replacing. I think he was happy to tell me that as I am resident in Tas and it would not have been his problem. That was two months ago and I now have 60K up without any further problem.

As mentioned in another reply my truck was also sitting in a dealers yard for four months with no action.

I wish I could check the one at home but it's evaporative and almost useless this close to the coast. :(
I know what you mean though because I've had a couple installed for the family'
I was going by the ratings they give for power consumption and cooling output in kw for both types. A home reverse cycle A/C might consume 2.5kw of power to provide say, 7.5kw of heating or 7kw of cooling.
The DKS-15D on my Triton at 3000rpm consumes 4.3kw of power to provide 7.4kw of cooling and is clearly less efficient than the home system but should be pumping out a similar chunk of cold.
The figures are on that site I posted, the second link.

Yeah as I said I don't understand car air ratings.

Look at the size of the indoor unit on the smallest 2.5kw home ac and it's 5 times the size of the car unit - so is the compressor - but it is limited in RPM.

Can't see how you can get double the capacity out of 1/5 the size evaporator with 1/5 the fan speed/airflow across it???? :?

On those figures the home A/C is 63% more efficient if my maths is correct, which makes sense with the bigger gear compared to the compact design for the car. The compressors are creating similar amounts of power, so although they might be different designs running at different speeds where it counts they are the same. Don't forget I've quoted the car at max comp. speed because it will operate at various speeds whereas the home comp. probably runs at a fixed speed.

Quoting the figures off the maker's site, so if you've had a good look you know as much as I do.

Ok this is the closest I could find to the topic without starting a new thread.. we used the air con on the weekend and it doesnt matter what setting we have it on ( feet and head, head only, defrost and head etc) there is absolutely no air coming out of the middle 2 vents near the MMCS. Is this normal? I am guessing not. We had the reversing camera installed into the MMCS last week. Would they have needed to disconnect anything to install that? I am getting sick of taking the car back to Mitsi for silly little warranty things!
