Brake controller - location and wiring

Re: Brake controller - location and wiring

Alright, I need help with from anyone who could explain!

I have installed the brake controller as described in the threads and instuctiins, positive through a 20A auto circuit breaker to the battery, and negative to the battery. Picked up the brake wire through the left kick panel (blue with orange). Tested wire to confirm only supply current with brake pedal pressed. Then, using the yellow wire from the genuine harness I connected the brake on trailer connector. I tracked the blue wire from the genuine trailer connector and it leads to the yellow wire I tapped into behind the kick panel. (prrviously this wite had nothing attached to it and was not in use.)

Now, I have turned on the car on and all seemed well enough, no flashy dash lists or anything (I don't have a trailer or van with me to test it on) but here is where I'm having an issue.

While I was sitting still, I had the clutch pressed to the floor, and I pressed the manual brake activation switch on the controller and it made a sound like my car was kicking over (like turning the key on an already started car) when I had my foot off the clutch it never had the same effect.

Does anyone know what is causing this?

I switched off my car and turned it to reds, put the clutch in and pressed the switch have and it almost started!

Not sure about other models, but the MQ requires the clutch pressed to start the car.

Have I done something wrong or is this likely to be solved once the actual trailer is plugged in??

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Disregard my post! I sorted it out! It helps to select the right wire!! God knows how, but I thought id picked the blue and orange wire up, but as it was short to work with I chose to tap into the wire on the other side of the connector! Only problem is I chose the wrong wire! Bloody rushing things!! Still, don't know what was causing it to turn on ignition from there!

On the plus side, I now know where to tap into for a push button start haha!

MM brake controller harness - helpful or waste?

Postby AussieAnth on Fri Feb 12, 2016 1:17 pm

Im about to buy a camper trailer for my 2013 MN GLX manual. I'll need an electric brake controller.

I can see on ebay you can buy a genuine MM electric brake controller harness or $125.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/261920263905?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

You can also buy the same harness paired with an older style Redarc brake controller for $370
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/251807104410?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

I'm looking at one of these new Tow Pro Redarc controllers, that dont need calibrating & have an auto and offroad manual control setting.
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/REDARC-TOW-PRO-ELITE-ELECTRIC-EBRH-ACCV2-TOWPRO-AUTO-BRAKE-CONTROLLER-/191714837861?hash=item2ca3184565:g:JqwAAOSwqYBWnqVO

I'd like to self install if the harness makes the Redarc a simple install. But im only average with electrical stuff. Might get an auto sparky to install if its tricky or time consuming.

Has anyone used the factory harness?
Did it make installing a controller any easier? Much soldering to be done?
Or was it just duplicating the wiring that comes with a Redarc, Tekonsha or something similar?

Keen to buy it soon but dont want to waste money on the harness if its unnecessary. If I need an auto sparky to install anyway, no point wasting money on the harness if it doesnt simplify the install.

There is a whole thread about his topic over at;

viewtopic.php?t=6584

I had a Crack at the install without a harness. Wasn't very hard, but cost about 40 to get everything from scratch (eg wire, connectors, circuit breaker, tape ect) took me about 2-3hrs total

Thanks Lee-Thal, good to know someone has used it and found it worthwhile.

What type of controller did you install with it?
The Tow Pro from Redarc needs 2 wires to the battery, 1 to the brake pedal signal and one to the trailer harness/plug. If the MM factory controller harness provides a separate wire to link into the last 2, then I think it will be worth it instead of having to tap into them. I'll give it a shot.

I did trawl through most of that 8 page thread about placement of the controller, but it didn't really help me out.

Still interested to know if anyone else has used the harness, and what type of controller you used.

Is one of the battery wires the earth? If so that sounds pretty standard.

The main thing with the genuine harness is that it plugs into existing stuff so no cutting, splicing, soldering etc and no risk of stuffing anything else up while poking around

Yes here is a link to the Redarc diagram.

If the harness keeps it all neat and removed the need to slice wires, I'll go with that.

Thanks for the feedback.

I used the OEM brake harness, with a Hayman Reese Sentinel controller ($100). They supplied the incorrect harness by mistake, but it only meant that I had to solder one wire, so no big deal. The OEM harness makes use of the cabling that is already there, and provides a very neat installation. I could have wired it without the harness, but I like the clean look of the OEM job. If you are not that handy with electrical things, you would save time and money by using the OEM harness.

I mounted the controller on the left hand side of the dash, next to the steering column. It was the only place that I could put it where I wasn't hitting my knee on it all the time. I still occasionally catch my knee on it, but not often enough for it to be a hassle. If you have an automatic, you could mount it next to the cigarette lighter. I found that the Hayman Reese gets in the way of the gearstick on the manual. Other units may fit.

I would have gone for one of the remote installations that only has the knob poking through the dash, but the best price I could get on the Redarc one was $320! I don't feel that it is $220 better than the Hayman Reese. I also like the fact that I can monitor the display on the Hayman Reese.

I have had good experiences with the Hayman Reese controller, and have fitted them to a number of vehicles, though this is just my personal bias. I know quite a few people who swear by Tekonsha controllers, and they are a nice, compact unit.

Is the factory harness only suitable for the MN or is it the same for the ML? Sounds the easy way to go but everything I find on that part number says for MN.

Does anyone have the brake controller harness instructions>

Postby Smellypaddler on Wed Mar 22, 2017 8:02 am

Hi,

I have done a quick search and looked through the threads but can't find what I am after.

I need to fit an electric brake controller and was hoping someone has the instructions for fitting the Mitsubishi Triton MN factory brake controller harness.

I fitted my own towbar and the factory towing harness but have no idea about brake controllers.

If anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated.

Hi all,
Installing a redarc tow pro elite in my MQ at the moment. Straight forward enough (Even without the plug and play harness).

The one thing that I have not worked and can't find in this thread is how and where is an easy place to pick up the brake light wire. If anybody knows the colour and location that would be great!

Cheers and thanks

A lot of guys pick it up front the brake pedal, or the brake light itself then run the wire back to the controller

Would think reliable operation is high priority, so switch at brake peddle should be best spot.

Thanks to all that have contributed to this thread. Just finished installing a Tekonsha Primus IQ in my ML dual cab. Picked up the brake wire in the passengers foot well right where they said it would be. My soldering skills aside I think it went quite well. I found a great place to mount the controller too. The ML dash is quite curvy but the ashtray trim panel is able to be removed by removing 2 screws, leaving a flat front to mount the controller to. Easily accessible, doesn’t hinder any vehicle operation and most importantly I won’t bang my knees on it getting in and out. Thanks.

Hi All,
Have just completed installing a Redarc Tow Pro Elite to my 09 ML. Found a near perfect mounting place under the Engine ECU mounting plate in the passengers kick well. Removed the Engine ECU from the mounting plate and as my pictures show how two bolt holes line up straight away. The other two I drilled into a valley area of the mounting plate so the bolt heads wouldnt foul on the Engine ECU.
Also I discovered with the help of this forum that the wiring points i needed were all in the kick panel more or less anyway.
I did need a longer RJ45 data cable which connects the ECU with the dash control knob but i had a longer one of them laying around in the office from old modems etc.
Used 4mm bolts and nuts and two of the mounting points I packed up with 3 extra washers so the unit wasn't twisted.
Then went to work wiring in the power, earth and brake signals.
My towbar wiring is the Mitsi genuine harness, so the blue wire for service brake pin 5 was laying idle. Cut off the mitsi genuine 3 pin plug and installed deutsch connectors which are very common in my industry.
Connected the service brake blue wire to the spare yellow wire in the 3 pin plug I cut off. This harness goes all the way to the passenger kick panel, again cut off the mitsi connector, installed a 3 pin Deutsch connector and terminated my yellow wire from the rear of the car to my brake output wire from the Redarc unit. Within those 3 pin plugs was the power and earth for my trailer lights so made sure they were as before.
The 12V+ was taken through a 4 pin plug further up beside the Engine ECU. This loom exits in behind the left hand head lamp. Again because I have mitsi genuine towbar light wiring they have used this for the 12v+ from the battery also. So I choose one of the spare wires in this loom (Green & white i think it was) attached a circuit breaker at the battery/ behind headlamp end and connected my 12v+ wire from the redac at the kick panel end. As before I cut off the genuine Mitsi connectors and re-terminated with 4 pin deutsch connectors.
Brake lamp signal wire was a simple splice and solder in the wire from the redarc controller to blue and orange wire in the plug second from bottom (C11)
I've managed to upload some photos of what I have done so maybe they will help others.

Just one word in relation to fitting the Redarc Tow Pro in the MQ, don't fit it to one of the blank panels on the right side of the steering wheel. THis is where mine is fitted and I have to constantly check that I haven't inadvertantly rotated the knob with my knee when entering or existing the vehicle. Fit it to one of the central blank panels.

Regarding wiring kits. Redarc dont have a specific MN kit. I have decided whether to use redarc or mitsu kit. I assume both will plug and play reasonably well?

There currently is not a specific kit for your vehicle, however, you will be able to use the standard universal wiring kit for your vehicle. Please see a link to this kit below;
https://www.redarc.com.au/tow-pro-unive ... -tpwkit014

Please also see some vehicle specific wiring instructions below, you will note that these specific instructions are for a newer generation Triton, however the routing of the wiring is expected to be similar to your vehicle;

Dont mean to revive an old thread & don’t want to start a new one but... I have just bought a van requiring electric brakes and have purchased the REDARC tow pro elite. I have searched on here and researched quite a bit.

I have an 07 ML & Wiring by previous owner is in the vehicle for EBrakes and Brake light pickup to the controller is off the brake pedal switch. Seems most people here are using this point for supply or blue orange wire.

My only question is has anyone had issues with the REDARC controller and interference with other systems in car as suggested by REDARC here

“Historically installers have used the Brake Pedal Switch. As the source of the brake signal however on the modern vehicle, REDARC DO NOT recommend sourcing the stop lamp signal from the brake pedal switch. Increasingly the brake pedal switches are not 12V, operate other vehicle systems or are controlled by a vehicle ECU.

Sourcing the brake signal at the brake pedal will also only detect braking events when the brake pedal is depressed (and the switch activated) and not brake applications activated by other on-board system”

Being an older car Does this not apply?
