I love on the MN that the valve clearances are 0.0035" and 0.0055".

Not that easy to find feeler gauges in 0.0005" increments.

Just finished doing the valve adjustment. The valve adj is not the problem its all the other stuff that has to come off just to get to the rocker cover. Done many a valve adjustment this takes the cake.
Oh also changed out the timing belts that was a nice job to do, straight forward. :)
Anybody interested i picked up a 17mm injection pipe socket from total tools $13

I was going to grind out a long socket to look like the one in the mitsi manual as I haven't seen anything like what we need in any tool joints.

What torque wrench are most people using on the fuel nuts?

I just use a 3/8" standard torque wrench with a normal crow's foot. Set the torque to the bottom of the range, knowing that you have a bit more leverage with the offset drive on the crow's foot. I think the trick is to not ridiculously overtighten them and cause damage. That style of joint doesn't need much torque to hold very high pressures, unlike the relief valve in the end of the rail that needs 3 gorillas on the end of a 6' cheater.

I wasn't rushing out to buy it. And I can't go to a place called total tools anyway, too much risk they'll take me in as one of their family.

After following the other link above though I found this, which I reckon will have to find its way into my kit. I might buy 4  http://r.ebay.com/FIASYs

  Total Tools will be disappointed at their chance of making this month's budget going out the door.

You can do a lot better than that.

I picked them up on special a few months ago for about $65 but even at $83 they're good value for Sidchrome quality.............and I know you have a soft spot for Sidchrome. ;)

I tried Total Tools locally previously and they only had an oxygen sensor tool which is 7/8".

I sourced mine from A Man's Toyshop locally. T & E Tools 17mm Injector Crows-Foot Wrench No: 4044 for $32.00. That was for both a short and long version.

Chris I think you missed my point about that screwdriver. It was specially shaped at the head for helping to punch back in the phillips head shape for when you've stripped half of it out. Also through tang for whacking it with the hammer. So you strip it first (guaranteed with say a soft ikea screw) then get that thing out, smack it with the hammer, then go for your sidchrome jobbie and unscrew it.

Yep. Sidchrome ones are the same. Hardened tip and through tang design.

Sorry guys should have given up more info. Total tools had to order the socket in.
Also had to use a pipe spanner on no. 4 injector pipe no room for socket too close to firewall.
Modified a 1/4" drive 12mm deep socket, ground a couple of flats to suit a 14mm open spanner, to loosen and tighten the lock nut on the rocker arm.
The socket drive hole allowed a regular philips head screw driver down the centre to make the adjustment for the valve clearance.
Used a sidchrome torque wrench set to 35nm +- 5 nm to tighten down flare nuts

This is for 2007 but there's a dropdown box at top left where you can change the year.

Seems like cheap insurance to check them, from here NTN I thought every 50k km was enough. If they get tight it is an expensive engine repair.
Maybe change the chain guide and tension-er too.
Reading elsewhere a ML engine rebuild can go $9500

4M41 Valve Adjustment

Postby freddo76 on Tue Mar 16, 2021 12:58 pm

I have a 2008 ML Ute, have just finished a decoke which went well, except the banjo bolt on the return diesel line on side of head which broke when being replaced. Found it had been 'stretched' by a previous mechanic and broke when i retightened it. I found oily mess on rear of rocker cover above 3 & 4 cylinder so investigated and found the seals damaged allowing oil to weep out on rocker cover onto side/rear of motor. Inside of seals damaged and wire coil exposed so must have been damaged when cover replaced in past. So i decided to check valve clearance, but how do you do it? Motor is TDC on 1st cylinder lumps on cams are in vertical pos. How are the gaps measured? I thought feeler gauge goes between bottom of lobe and roller on rocker arm but too tight. Any help would be appreciated. Have looked at several manuals but not enough detail shown.
Cheers
