Center tail shaft rotation update

Postby ArrowsWA on Thu Aug 14, 2008 12:08 pm

Thought I'd advise on status since rotation of bearing to cure take off shudders
Recap
Shudder occurred from new, was always worse unloaded than loaded, became more prominent after mild lift in rear suspension, again worse if no load in the tray or trailer attached.
Spoke to head of mechanics at local Mits dealer and he said he would back me up for warranty concerns after I preformed rotation (they understandably can not do it, until official Mits instructions as a fix * doubt that will ever happen as that would be admitting to the problem in the first place*)

Now done approximately 1000 klm since rotate results are

No vibration experienced whatsoever, loaded nil, unloaded nil, with trailer attached nil, without nil, with 4 wheel drive engaged nil, have not done any low range 4wd work yet since fix, or towed in 4wd either, 80% of kilometers covered would be on sealed roads in 2WD,
Conclusion to date Fix works and so far no side effects at all
Cheers to all

Like you Buzzy, I will be doing it this weekend as well. No need for directions. It's two nuts. My only thoughts is the mounting points on the bearing itself might foul the body during the change making it hard to spin but others have done it successfully in next to no time so it's obviously not an issue. Thanks for the feedback ArrowsWA.

No its that easy even I could di it (that means it was real easy) Buzz just undo the 2 bolts at the top of the housing tower, push the shft up slightly by palm of your hand and rotate the bearing housing through 180 degree and re-bolt down (14mm is the size)

Not sure I'm feeling the shudder...I have one (shudder i mean) at like 1800-2000 in third..put it down to low revs...nothing down low in 1st.. kinda thought it's cause I'm being careful cause never had 1) 4wd 2) a diesel. Not sure what to do now..

I wouldn't call 1800-2000 revs low in the rev range. The diesel develops most of it's torque through this range peaking at about 2000 revs. Does it only occur in third? Is it felt through steering or body?

Hmmm, my car has developed the shudder now after running the bigger tyres for atleast 1000kms....(mine is auto) is it just a matter of turning the centre tail shaft bearing? Much like the manual version?

Probably not. The auto has a one piece tail shaft therefore no centre bearing.

Wrong, it does have a centre tail shaft bearing! It looks the same as the one that barra had in his pics...

I could well be wrong. I drive a manual. That was just my recollections from previous "Shudder" threads

Hmmm well i will take a picture of what i think the the tail shaft bearing tonight...but im pretty sure it is, as my old MK had one, and it was flogged out after 10000kms of driving with a lift! So i think might need to try the rotation thing...

I updated my profile and put the centre bearing photo and gearbox spacer photo back on if you need to have a look.

Interesting, the auto triton at Ironman has a one piece tailshaft...

I understand that it does have the one-piece tailshaft....but if your rotating the centre tailshaft bearing then how can i? As i have a tailshaft bearing aswel...mine has developed a small shudder upon take off...but is barely noticable!

If the centre bearing is there, it would suggest two piece. Give it a twirl and see what happens
