Can anyone recommend a good recovery kit?

Postby Jitsukablue on Sun Aug 17, 2008 1:23 pm

I'm looking for a kit, I'll buy a HL jack separately to use as a winch if need be.
So Far, T-Max and Just Straps look the best price, anyone have these kits, are they any good?

Ive got a tjm full recovery kit. Paid around $350 i think. havent used it yet but quality seems good. It comes in its own carry bag which i throw in the back, good forcarrying around and storing.

I think either would be decent, just depends on what you want to spend i suppose. :)

For straps n stuff I got the repco maxitrax bag with a snatch, winch ext strap, tree trunk protector, 2x bow shackles & a pair of riggers $179 also bought another snatch as a spare & a snatch block (same brand) all up I think $260 and it all fits in the bag. The tree trunk protector works great as an equaliser for snatching off the 2 front tow/tiedown hooks

all you need if you don't have a winch is a Snatch strap two rated shackles some gloves in a bag.

4wdmonthly did a comparo a while back and alot of the cheaper snatch straps beat the expensive ones.

Supercheap has a sale on some of there kits (when i was in ther last weekend) for $79.00 you got a bag snatchy gloves & 2 shackles
can't beat that.

A snatch strap is not a long term item they have a used by date and only a certain number of snathes in them
IMO no point spending a fortune.

funnily enough the repco catalogue just turned up $179 for my kit, $99 for basic kit, $59 for snatch, $39 for snatch block. Even if you don't have a winch the ext strap can also double as a tow rope & I would definatley use some sort of equaliser across the two front points for snatching off, also carry a shovel

Shovel, bow saw, gloves and snatch strap with 2 x rated shackles is all you need as a basic kit. Maybe a spare pair of jeans for when you have to wade through the thigh deep muddy water to take your strap to the guy waiting at the edge of the boghole who's happy to pull you out but sure ain't getting his feet wet.

Tried them on the w/e and couldn't find that deal. the only pack I could find was snatchy shovel and guage gloves and shovel for $129 but it wasn't on special. I asked and he said it might have been on special previously but couldn't match it. :(

I have a T-Max and find it ok. Cheaper than the big name brands with the strap, soft leather gloves and 2 shackles. It suits me...I use the gloves for everything...chopping wood, using the chainsay, using a mates crowbar etc...$69.00 at Coventry (I had to haggle)

For those who have been out and about looking,

The Boys in the yard have been discussing putting together our own recovery kits for the trucks when we get stuck. I recently got caught at HMAS Albatross just off the run way, which required a lot of important people to come and assess and a small fortune for escape.

Anyway, with the exception of fleabay, has anybody come across shackles/snatch strap rated at 11000kgs or above, the best I have found so far was 8000kgs, and I have a dry weight of 8750 or there abouts, add on a few hundred litres of water and again diesel, plus my fat arse, I would rather not have a strap snap on me, fully loaded I pull in ~25t. and would have to set up a separate chassis tow if that ever happens

I have tried the local 4WD Shops with no luck, anybody seen anything?
